So my mum, sister and neice flew out to Rome on Tuesday for a cruise. They got taken out of the ESS queue and sent through the passport control manned booths due to mum having a walking stick and neice having a sunflower lanyard.
The rest of the plane people still had to go through the ESS process. Some others on the cruise as well said it took just over an hour or waiting.
So not too bad but still longer then normal.

I went in to Rome and out of Napoli airport last week and no problems whatsoever. Not even a sign of a fingerprint machine in both.

Yeah it seems to be very randomly enforced but i suspect the more holiday destinations for the spanish beaches magaluf etc will be busy.
My mom and sis and neice had no issues either as they had the walking stick and sunflower lanyard bypassed the machines straight to passport control.
