The new rules that came in earlier this year for travelling on a UK Passport can now be a bit of a nightmare when arriving in an EU country . For instance, In Pisa it took two hours to pass through which was longer than the actual flight time from Bristol.

Another reason I've taken to cruising (from Southampton).

Southampton is really easy to sail from a good set up, however not for me, been to norway, been to northern europe, been to the med from southampton, not intrested in a tranatlantic, so now i prefer flying into Europe.
much prefer to feel some sunshine with great food that you get in the med and greek islands.

We’ll be eating in the Med very soon mate. Four sea days will give us an increasing temperature and none of the aggy that comes with airports.

21 days takes us nicely East..🛳️👍🏻

How does it work for getting on and off the ship with the ess rules. Passport, finger prints and photo like at airports? 🤔

I honestly don't know yet.

But I bet your bottom dollar that the cruise industry will do it with far less fuss.

Let's face it, if they create long queues, we'll all stay on the ship. :)

I'll keep you informed 'live' in a few days time.

Mods, would it make sense to merge this with the similar thread started a few weeks ago? This adds a ship born aspect, but seems to be the same topic.

The Schengen area is as we were for British Passport holders for this summer. Cruising to France and Spain from Saturday and will report any issues.

See gov.uk Travelling to the EU and Schengen area.

Just got back from a cruise on P&O Iona to Northern Spain and France. No issues with security in any of the ports. They usually only want to see your cruise card. We were told in France that we had to take passports out with us and in Spain were told that a copy/photo would suffice. In none of the four ports were we asked to show them.

Just did a quick google as I thought I read it somewhere

Cruises that begin and end at a UK port are exempt from EU Entry/Exit System (EES) biometric checks for port-of-call visits to Schengen Area countries. You will only need to complete EES checks if you are boarding or disembarking your ship within the Schengen region itself.

When we landed at Linate airport for the Olympics in February there was a lot of issues with the finger print reading machines but no issue with that, this time people were having issues with reflections on the facial recognition screen from people queuing behind the wait lines
