Charlieboy it comes down to the fact that this has become a B team via the backdoor competition.
As much as the idea of B teams in the league keeps being muted, the ugly idea keeps cropping up. It's clearly on the agenda for those who have significant clout to push it.
There's resistance to it now, but several years ago the idea of Argyle playing against PL B teams in any competition was alien and now it's a reality. Which is why this competition in its current guise should be treated with absolute distain as it supports the premise of B teams in the pyramid.
Like you say, these competitions are a great opportunity to showcase our own academy talent. I would love nothing more than for the B teams to be scrapped from the competition and the boycott ended. It would be truly brilliant to have (back) a competition in which we can play our academy with at least 6-7000 fans in attendance rather than an 1/8th of our usual league attendance despite a BoGoF offer. Now that would be far better for our fringe players and academy and would give the games less of a sterile feel.
As it currently is I'm absolutely delighted when we bin out of the group stage.
