I would challenge the thoughts of those who think that the Liverpool game is an 'unwelcome distraction'. I think the opposite, that it is a welcome distraction. My reasoning is that we will get unparalleled exposure not only nationally but all around the world. Why does that matter?
On Sunday morning, as some have already said, Colin Murray will be featuring 'The Janner Song' on his Sunday morning 5Live radio show. He has a regular slot for football anthems and their association with a particular club. Many go back decades or even over a century. Colin is a fan of Argyle as he correctly refers to us and even though on Sunday his allegience might be elsewhere. 'The Janner Song' was first played v Pompey in March 2022. Schuey and Nance went to the 'Field of Dreams' play put on by the GTs earlier in 2022 and were both moved to tears, as was everyone who was lucky enough to see it, by Rick and Dave giving full voice to the song, so familiar from the legendry performances at the GTs Fans Fests.
For me The Janner Song is the embodiment of our rise from the dark days of 2011 when we were so close to going out of business in August of that year and all hope of survival had all but evaporated. Thankfully the joint efforts of Jame Brent, Vivien Pengelly and the Council , Gary and the GTs, Chris and the Trust, Sue Pollard (Fan of the Year), Pasoti and of course the magnificent Green Army ensured we had a club to rebuild. Despite a hiccup where we nearly went out of the League v Rochdale the climb back although uneven has accelarated under the guardianship of Simon and Jane. Sunday gives us all the chance to sing 'The Janner Song' with even more passion, volume and outstretched hands - when you do so think of those who helped us to get where we are now, but also, and poignantly, to those that are sadly no longer with us to witness it. Let the nation and the world know what we are about. After that the game may well be secondary although to misquote an Anfield legend, 'I would love it' if against all odds we could get a result although in reality I would be elated if we could just score.
