The wages each team paid out to players in League One for season 2021/2022.
It shows the massive gulf between clubs like Sheffield Wednesday paying out a total of £10 million on wages and at the other end Cambridge who paid out just under £1.8 million.

As we already know we massively overachieved last season, our wages were the 8th lowest in L1 but we finished in 7th place.
Our average attendance of 13,130 was our highest since the 2005/2006 season and with season ticket sales approaching 9,000 for this season has enabled the board to increase the player budget by a reported 20% for 2022/2023.

The wage numbers have been taken from the Salary Sport website and won't be totally accurate but will give an idea.

Yearly squad total wages for each club quoted first, followed by total weekly wage, average attendance and then finishing position in L1 last season.

Sheffield Wednesday - £10,131,160. £194,830. 22,470. 4th.

£49200 with a reported 20% uplift gives us a weekly budget of just under £60k.

That moves us up 2 places in comparison providing other teams stayed the same.

Four times a better budget than us, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich had.

For those clubs to not get promoted with that significant advantage then to me that is failure.

How is our budget so low with our pretty decent gates and cup run income?

We are building our reserves for infrastructure improvements, are we not?

I doubt whether other teams have the need to do that and are putting all their efforts into their playing budget.

We did very well last season, and the manager has an increased budget for this season, so we cannot complain.

Interesting that Rotherham only had the tenth best playing budget but were promoted automatically.

We need to be able to follow that.

Very interesting . Bolton, Wycombe and Rotheram all around 3.3 to 3.5m mark so we are 800k to 1m below. We are clearly the outlier that performed exceptionally well vs budget.

We probably need to aim for a budget around mid table and close to Rotheram and Wycombe to compete. Surprised by Oxford, Charlton and even Burton all seem very high for clubs of their size and where they finished last season. Fleetwood is also ridiculous seeing as they can barely muster 3,000 for home games.

Not sure those figures are correct as at Senior Greens the CEO said Argyle expect to about the 7th highest budget this season. A 20% increase on the figure in that table wouldn’t put us that high even with the change in teams due to promotion and relegation.
Although if the CEO is correct it does suggest a lot of teams budgets are very similar.

Well it’s pretty obvious where we need to input that new investment if we want to make the Championship anytime soon.

A budget might refer to player signing on and relocation fees rather than just wages.
