Sad to hear of his passing. One of my early memories of watching Argyle was Johnny Newman. Very good, honest, whole hearted player. A role model for me to try and reflect in my performances on the pitch at school. Sadly never on a par with Johnny Newman!. Many thanks for the memories.

RIP John, an early hero-never forget him being chaired through Plymouth station by the other players after that win at Millwall

Johnny Newman was some player. He was also a great Captain. Argyle were so lucky to have had him as a player. He nearly came back to manage Argyle in the mid 80's following the sacking of Johnny Hore but his wife was settled in Herefordshire and did not want to move back to Plymouth. Dave Smith was subsequently appointed.
How we could do with a Johnny Newman type player in the team right now !!
A great man. RIP
