Can’t imagine Stokes would want the pressure and I think it would be wrong to pile it on. Broad can be divisive. Alistair Cook to hold the fort?

Longer term, perhaps we need a specialist captain in the Brearley mould. I’m struggling though ….

English cricket seems to constantly appoint the (or one of) the "best" players as captain.

Perhaps time to look for someone with strong captaincy skills as a criteria?

For those of a certain vintage, Mike Brearley was an exceptional captain, while only an average Test standard cricketer.

Is it better to appoint, say, Stokes who is so pivotal to the balance of the team but with limited captaincy experience with the risk of impacting his performance levels with the additional responsibility ahead of someone who has the relevant tactical nous.

The second option, of course, equally sees the captain under pressure if his form doesn't merit a place in the side.

Edit - just posted and realised almost duplicated FB's post. Great minds or fools never.......

It's the right decision and maybe Root jumped before he was pushed.
He's a great batsman but an average captain and his in-play tactical decisions have been poor.
At least he's staying in as a player.

Who next? No one stands out, Stokes has previously said he wouldn't want the job and would he be fit enough to be playing every game?
Broad would be the sensible choice in a holding role for this summer but again who after that?
Josh Buttler might have had a chance if he wasn't recently dropped as a player, he's done a good job as vice captain of the white ball teams.

I wonder if Broad would want it after being unceremoniously dropped from the West Indies tour.

Stokes would be the logical long term solution although as mentioned previously, he is a little injury prone, plus he plays in all three formats of the game.

Eoin Morgan?

He wasn't a dazzling success during his brief Test career (although he does have centuries against India and Pakistan to his name), but it's not like we have any undroppable run-machines in our top seven apart from Root.

Very true!

Good shout I think - good man manager and tactician in the short game. If he can do that in the longer game then I think an average of 25-30 would be acceptable. As you say it can’t be much worse.

Morgan is a good shout as a holding captain for this summer, he's 35 so not a long term answer.

Hmm I'm not so sure about this, fitness and work load is a problem for Stokes, as you say it's hopefully short term.
