Maybe someone who can tell Rooney not to play three up front away from home
eg Cissoko, TJ, Bundhu at Sheffield W
eg Wright, Grey, Bundhu at Norwich
You mean one up front with two wingers? Probably the most popular formation in modern football. Instead let’s play a back 9 and lump the ball to a striker who can’t win anything
Not sure your angle on the Norwich game Penlee, as we played 3 centre backs, wing backs, and 2 CMs. Ought to have had enough cover (lol, 6-1) to cater for Wright, Gray, Bundu. It was roughly the L1 promotion formation.
But think you're right about Sheff Wed, in fact it was even more extreme! We played 4-4-1-1, with MW and Cissoko as wingers
and Bundu just off TJ.
PAFC123, if you think that was a 4-3-3 with 1 up front and two wing forwards, surely you're saying Bundu was the most advanced in a three-man midfield?
It was that same shape 4-4-1-1 in pre-season - at Bristol Rovers friendly I was with work colleagues in the home end, stood in line with the halfway line. Absolutely certain it was a flat 4 in midfield. MW and Cissoko were in line with the central midfielders every time the players got back into shape. Bundu was far up just behind TJ.
It was very attacking and unbalanced, suicidal really. Lethal combination of being outnumbered in CM, wingers who don't have skillset to help the midfield, nor a willingness to cover full back. It also had MW and Bundu fundamentally out of their preferred positions - arguably Cissoko too.
That shape is not the most popular formation in modern football. Teams that play one up top and two wing forwards have 3 midfielders, one of which is fairly attacking. Rooney played Bundu off the striker.
In fairness to Rooney, he changed it. He kept MW and Cissoko wide but ditched Bundo off a striker, and we improved. Our good run performance wise was: Sunderland (C.Wright), West Brom (Gyabi), Luton (Al-Hajj), Burnley (Al-Hajj), Blackburn (Al-Hajj).
C.Wright, Gyabi, Al-Hajj make the shape very different as they can contribute (to varying degrees and styles) to the midfield and link play to the forwards.
