I think its the exact opposite, actually. This very chant was literally sung at BWP a decade ago, and didn't get this type of reaction. I could catalogue the many horrendous things shouted and chanted at players through the past decades, including racism and homophobia. Just watch the highlights of our 1984 FA Cup semi final if you want a taste of what was deemed acceptable for fans to do in the 80s. If anything, as a society we have become more sensitive to it, quite rightly, and more willing to call it out.

That’s the change in social media use though. When the BWP chant was sung the atmosphere became really tense in the ground (and indeed outside). BWP defintiely reacted to it. Exeter were adapting to the ‘better than Sean’ being sung by our crowd so there was a degree of spontaneity to it.

I also remember the reaction to Exeter singing the Nichols’s song being particularly heightened. No one discussed it after because public on line discussion wasn’t such a thing

Their Hartridge chant was out of order. I understand booing him and giving him grief from their perspective but bringing his family into it was out of order

For balance it's worth pointing out the Adam Stansfield chants that someone has already mentioned. I also recall Argyle fans chanting about Reuben Reid calling him the "c" word when the teams met at Home Park after he had signed for them. Throwing objects of course is proper scummy and dangerous and I hope their fan is banned or something

I've always said this about Exeter as a place, massively overhyped. It's basically a village with a few nice shops, easier for people to say it's "nicer" than Plymouth, in the same way as saying Salcombe is nicer than Plymouth. Your comparing Exeter (a town with a cathedral) with Plymouth (a city without a cathedral).

Er, Plymouth DOES have a (RC) Cathedral;-)
