Paraguay win on penalties. Incredible! Germany are out! Don't mention the VAR.

That was another terrible game of football mind. We need an early goal on Wednesday or it’s going to be the same.
Certainly not a thriller - but an interesting game tactically, I thought
I loved the paraguay defending. Shows how well a team can do - without necessarily having star quality- on hard work and defensive cohesion. Something to admire there.
Germany had some good possession i thought - but it was sensible possesion mostly- in Paraguay's half rather than brainless / kamikaze possesion in their own half ....which has blighted the english game at times IMO
I do prefer a statistical basis to games ( charles reep) and liked that Germany were getting a lot of ball into the ' golden triangle'( the space between the penalty spot and the base of the two goal posts) - - this is where most goals are scored from ( possibly because this area is so difficult to defend against positive balls - tijanis goal v sheff u ?) . No joy for Germany this time - but i liked the thinking....

Apparently Klopp, who is doing German TV work including the post match on pitch interviews with Naglesmann, said he'd like the job the other day.

Until last night only Uli Stielike had ever missed a penalty for Germany in a World Cup and that was in 1982. Now there's three more names to add to the list.
I'm not sure Germany's tactics could have been that good. Rarely threatened and terrible 1st half
There seems to have been a shift in the balance of power in Europe over the last couple of decades with Germany consistently mediocre at major tournaments and Italy not even qualifying for the last three world cups,although there were two outliers in 2014 and 2020. France and Spain would appear to have taken over the mantle of being the teams to beat-interesting subject for discussion as to why that should be. Bad management? Domestic leagues not conducive to the production of top class players for the national teams? No doubt there would be many other points of view put forward but those countries certainly aren't the forces that they once were.
