To be honest, I'm not fussed about goals scored. Yes, a record of some goals is useful but I don't think we need someone that has scored 20 for 3 or 4 years in a row. We need someone that will get 10-15 but can be the focal point in the team. Hold the ball up, run the channels and work hard starting the press from the front when needed.

So, while I see the value of a Wells or Smith or AN Other 30something, my only worry (with no evidence) is are they mobile enough? Will they get about the pitch, week in, week out leading the line on their own? I think I'd rather see someone mid-20's with a couple hundred games behind them, even if their scoring record is more 1 in 4 then 1 in 2.5 or 3.

I just remember how Hardie burnt himself out at the end of the L1 winning season and the first Championship season playing as a lone 9. So the thought of someone 33, 34, 35 playing that role and still going strong come March, April next year is a concern.
Was he burnt out at the end of L1 . Ennis of course missed a few weeks out injured and then came back in and did what was necessary.

Re fitness , I think players look after themselves , plus we’ve already signed 2 young strikers plus I think we’ll sign a loan striker as well .

This is quite useful . Just use the drop down menus . There are still some decent free agents available from the Championship/ L1 depending on position.

The idea of 'proven' scorer is interesting

I'd be interesting in other people's comments

We have had some success of buying young strikers from big clubs and 'bllooding' them- nial ennis and SEB are examples

But when it comes to strikers with any amount of experience it seems to be - what you see ( goals per game)- is generally what you get. This has often proven to be the case. In some instances you can even pick up a regular scorer for little relative money- eg tommy tynan. Other times eg david Kemp- it will cost you some decent money.

What does seem to have happened a few times with Argyle is that they will pick up scorers from a lower division who then replicate their goals per game ratio in a higher league with Argyle. There are a few examples of this. Ashley barnes ( although his Argyle career was largely on loan to other sides), dwight marshall, sean mccarthy ( who slightly improved his ratio at argyle) and jamie mackie.

What rarely happens ( at least from memory- although stand to be corrected on this) is that an experienced player , signed by argyle, drastically improves their goals per game ratio .

For this reason if Argyle dont want to spend out serious money on a proven scorer ( which often seems to be the case) , it often seems to have worked ( see examples above) where argyle take a chance on a striker with a good goals per game ratio, in a lower division...

I always find that 'burnt out' phrase amusing. Like someone working in an office 16 hours a day. As opposed to a young athlete expected to run around for 70 or 80 mins twice a week.

Steve - I can assure you he’s not !

An age where many would be but he’s fit as a butchers dog , good availability and led our front line for the majority of last season
(Saved our season after we bought two chumps and helped us into a over achieving 6th place) - as good as he’s had for some years which speaks for itself

Uses his experience & nous , clever in his runs and ‘bumping’ bigger centre halves and a very good finisher

What he also is , is a top top pro who helps others especially the younger, advice , setting a dressing room culture etc

I can understand purely looking at age we’d all normally baulk at a signing

We signed a golden gem in Arron Wilbraham similarly once

Both are in a small percentage who make absolute sense at those ages

There’s an argument he still has plenty to offer in Championship and will always score goals

Personally , I really can’t see a downside in signing him if you could

What's happening with Charlie Kelman? There was a rumour a little while ago that we had a £2m bid rejected.

As is often the case with centre-forwards you would expect this to be a deal done late in the window whilst QPR hold out for the max price, or use him for themselves.

Anybody got any insight?

He's recently been linked with WBA and I think Southampton. I only ever saw this rumour from one person on twitter. Never saw it anywhere else.
