FIFA CWC bias...

This was a certainty before it started. New Zealand's two professional teams play in the A league and are not eligible for this competition. Auckland City is a amateur/part timers team. Their next two games are Benfica and Boca Juniors so those results may be similar. A good experience in many ways to be part of this level of competition but I suspect that all they will score is some shirts from top level players

Near empty ground for the Chelsea Vs Luton Athletic FC game. Americans don't do 'soccer' tournaments. When will FIFA learn...

Stranger things have happened.

West Auckland Town FC have won a club "World Cup"*. An amateur team in the Northern League comprised largely of miners who sold furniture to pay for the trip.

*Edit: Actually, twice

They're going to get enough money to distort their league forever. Even if they lose every game (which they will) they'll still earn transformative amounts of cash.

The money they receive will be split between the club, NZ Football and other clubs under an agreement that it would be shared.
Auckland City and NZ Football (NZ's equivalent of the FA) are in formal mediation to finalise how the money will be shared. The local press are reporting the figure to be NZ$ 6.2 million.

That's sensible. If only that happened in all continental competitions.

In fairness, the Auckland City team consisted of plumbers, electricians, teachers, a doctor, a nurse, etc.

I hope the BM players feel really happy with themselves.

As a Chelsea fan, this tournament is an absolute waste of time. Alas, I'll still watch our games, but I'd much rather we had taken the youth team and allowed the first team players a full summer off. Most played last year at the Euro's, and most will play next summer at the World Cup. It's an absolutely pointless competition that belongs in the bin

I look forward to Maresca bemoaning too many fixtures in about September/October.

The big clubs dont help themselves, look at Manure who decided that after a long hard season they needed to head off for a tour to Asia to play two or three really pointless fixtures. The level of greed is off the scale.

And Pep, if I remember right this tournament wasn’t mandatory for clubs to play in

FIFA mandated that clubs had to bring full strength squads, I think quite a few teams were looking to rest a few until they did that.
