The best thing Derek Adams ever did, apart from signing Carey and Bradley (l find it hard to say Lameiras too as he almost got rid of him) is convert Conor Grant to a left bsck.
He was brillant there. I know we were struggling in that area (canāt remember if it was injuries, suspensions or player form) so it was one of those times you try something different.
He was fantastic. Best player on the park. Everything was ahead of him in terms of play. So his passing range was even more effective.
Some people seem to think l donāt rate the guy. It simply isnāt true. Ask me which wing back position we have the biggest problem ld say Edwards because literally nothing is created in the way of scoring chances down that right side. He gets involved but he drives into the box with late runs. Thatās his game. Not crossing.
Conor Grant has excellent delivery. The problem is that in a 3-1-4-2 he is initially our only source of width on that left hand side. When Broom and Mayor are ahead of him and he can inter change with them he then gets the space to cross. The problem is when he is isolated. He then doesnāt have the pace to beat a player so often he ends up turning back.
The guy needs support for him to flourish out wide. If Argyle even played a 3-4-3, at least there would be natural width to help him. At the moment the system puts the onus on him. So when he comes up against energetic & pacey players he is exposed because of his lack of pace and he canāt cover that whole wing.
The guy is a good player. I just think the system exposes him some what. Fleetwood 1st goal is a prime example. He is the best player to play there currently but we do need to see more of Law.
Personally, and itās just an opinion, l think if he had support out wide with him heād flourish even more and the team would function better. To me he is more naturally gifted to be a left back, but he could play wing back if he had someone ahead of him.
The system doesnāt need revolution. It just needs tweaking. Perhaps then we would play with width instead of these continuous long channel balls.
