Callum Wright wins trio of awards (at Wigan)

At League One level Callum Wright's record for goal contributions (goal or assist) is:

Very good record without factoring in his work rate, which I love. Plus, he's 26 now, not old but got some experience under his belt.

So many judge him on Championship performances, which didn't cut it - although IMO he became a bit of a scapegoat at times meaning the criticism was harsher than deserved.

Putting aside his League One record, it's interesting that Cleverley had a look at Wright and decided he was surplus to requirements, only to revert to picking players who would fundamentally put a shift in above all else.

A glaring mistake to loan him out in my eyes. He was one of my bankers for stabilising us in League One - clear he was good at the level, but wouldn't have any better offers when we relegated.

But, we have eventually improved and stabilised, so whilst I resent the criticism of Wright and think he should've been with us this year, he's not so good that it matters much now. I suppose now I've put that in writing he'll reach his peak for Wigan next season and register 25 goal contributions!

Good luck to him, always liked him.

I didn't agree with letting him leave and this just proves what a good player he is at League One level. Yes, he was rubbish in the Championship, but he brings guaranteed quality in League One and he'd be a much better option than Amaechi, that's for certain.
1) "he'd be a much better option than Amaechi, that's for certain" -

Maybe, but how can anyone know that until only after the season has concluded? Did you know that before the first game of the season?

2) "he'd be a much better option than Amaechi, that's for certain" -

I'm not sure how he can be a better option when they are two different types of players and they play in different positions. Wright is a player who likes to drift into space, make runs into space and a player who likes to run beyond the forward. He likes to play centrally or sometimes off of the left. Amaechi likes to play off of the right, likes the ball to feet, and likes to isolate his defender into a 1 v 1 situation where he can then run at and dribble past his marker.

Don't remember him scoring 7 goals in a season for us, did he even get 5 in 4 seasons?

Don't get me wrong, I liked him, he is a decent L1 player, and felt he was a bit unlucky to be pushed out. Glad he has found a club where it is working out for him, and wish him well.
He had a decent record when we signed him in the Championship 101 season, then found his ceiling in the Championship where his stats were not great.
I'm not saying he's a world beater but he is clearly an effective League 1 player who can do the business at this level and stay fit.
We've moved on and suspect he will depart on a free transfer but I don't think we have improved on him.

Agree, I also don't think we improved on him, but also didn't go backwards. Dale in particular is a pretty similar standard and style of player in a lot of ways. Maybe slightly more robust and higher workrate, but either would have done a job for us this year.
Can't see him coming back, particularly as we still have Dale, who Cleverley obviously rates, so as you say, wish him well and move on.

If a player doesn't want to be here, is it productive to force him to stay? At every club there are managers and players who don't gel. So easy in retrospect to blame the manager, but where does that get us?

I think Cleverley told him he may not get the minutes he expected, which prompted him seeking the loan. Could be wrong.

I think he'd have done great in the post-January revolution, but just one of those things.

I think that's my point though, i didn't know about his assists but Wright had 7 goals this season and Dale has 1 goal. Last season Dale scored 1 goal on loan at Wigan (ironically) so I think we have gone backwards output wise.

Not sure why there are so many comparisons between Wright and Dale / Amaechi on this thread. Wright plays as a 10 - not out wide. A comparison with Watts would be fairer.

I was behind Wright for a long time. But the cowardly tackle at Coventry to earn an extended break over the festive period when the team were struggling cost him a lot of credit in my book. He’s certainly a decent league one player and it’s a shame he’s leaving on a free, but we can do better.

That was certainly the official version. Again I could be wrong, but what I heard (from a good source who rarely tells me anything!) was that CW wanted to be further north, Tom Cleverley didn't fancy him anyway, there appeared to be no one offering a fee, and so the wigan loan was the best solution for all.

I’ve heard that also heard that Wright was leaking team details to clubs last season and one club he was leaking to was Watford

I wouldn’t weep over him he was a rat who was leaking our team to other clubs.

Good riddance
