Plans for a new £60m stadium for Bristol City Football Club will not be called in by the government.

The club is planning to build a new 30,000-seat stadium on greenbelt land at Ashton Vale.

The plans were backed by Bristol City Council in November 2009 who said they were "minded to approve" the scheme.

The Government Office for the South West could have called the plans in, which would have led to a public inquiry

30,000? Thought the World Cup required a 40,000 capacity.

OK, the stadium is a way off being started and there are still hurdles to overcome, but. seems a little bizarre not to build it to the required specification from the outset.

I guess they are planning to upgrade if the World Cup is awarded to England - anyone know if that's the case?

Hmmm, at lot of people don't realise that even if England do get the world cup we are still not guaranteed to host games. FIFA require two less cities than our world cup bid has chosen so there is the distinct possibility that we might share games with others.
