No financial fair play rules in league 1 or 2.

Certainly nothing like the current Championship rule of £39million loss over 3 years.
Ipswich did very similar in that they spent a large amount on transfers and wages in their final league 1 season and lost somewhere around £15 million finishing 2nd.
It meant they spent relatively little when they hit the Championship as they’d already built a team ready for championship whilst outside of the fair play rules.

Makes sense if you have the money to throw at it.

This is just the way football is.

The problem is not what Birmingham are doing. As its no different from what Wrexham have and many other clubs before them have done.

The problem is that it creates these notions that other clubs, like Argyle, aren't ambitious enough. Why aren't we spending millions will be the cries from a small, but vocal minority of the fan base. And clubs like Argyle are trying to find a healthy balance but one or two other clubs are smashing that ideology with their own brand of buying success.

No wonder we have fans at Argyle questioning our transfer policy when they get envous of what's going on throughout the EFL.

l don't think it's right to question our transfer policy but they will use these scenarios as a reflection of our own lack of ambition.

I usually like to warn against overconfidence when a club drop into League 1 or into League 2 for the first time, but looking at Birmingham’s squad, I’d be extremely surprised if they don’t come straight back up.

They certainly have no excuses.

It's perfectly possible they'll do a Leicester/Norwich/Southampton/Wolves etc and use a nice comfortable promotion in League 1 as a springboard for an immediate challenge in the Championship. But it's also possible that they'll keep tripping over the 11 men behind the ball they'll encounter almost every week. There's nothing more morale-sapping than losing 1-0 at home to Burton who've brought 94 fans and had one shot on target. But you could see it happen.
