We got two things wrong in the championship (1) in general terms, the belief we had some of magic formula which I think bred complacency that we did not need real experience when in fact the stars just aligned in a one off fashion for our promotion year (2) more specifically, the appointments of Foster and Rooney, for different reasons both disastrous appointments.

Yes, agree with that. I think promotion to the Championship is still possible with an exceptional season and a dash of luck. That would do for me.

Promotion is absolutely possible. I think we will become more competitive as the new L1 financial regulation start to bite over the next year or 2 and other clubs are forced to rein in their excesses.

Staying in the Champ when we get there is a whole other story though.

Tolaj hasn't been gone long. I'm confident Derek and co. will finalise a deal for a striker in good time. Still 5 weeks before the window closes.

I've heard that Wareham going is dependent on Ballard moving somewhere other than Bristol City.

If that happens, then I would imagine Bim's stock rises considerably.

Then we'll see what Bim thinks about staying with Argyle when 'silly offers' come in.

I've also heard that Exeter want as much for Wareham as we received for Tolly.

Wareham won't be worth anywhere near what Tolly went for for a number of reasons..

Most importantly Wareham is into his final year of his contract with Exeter who need to sell or risk losing him for nothing. We didn't have to sell Tolly as he had another 3 years left on his contract.

We bought Tolly for £1.2 million so already had that value in the bank before he improved on it.

Tolly is a better player in that he contributes more to the team with his pressing and assists.

Based on that I'd say the most Wareham is worth is about £1.2 - £1.4m in a very good market, but as I say every club will know that Exeter must sell Wareham in this window or risk lots of money, so they are not at all in a good starting negotiating position and will want a bidding war.

I don't think Kelman did very well in the Championship last season, which might start putting teams off from paying big money for players that were successful at a lower standard?

The height thing for me was more about it's not just about scoring goals but also a players capability to offer an outlet up front if playing as a lone striker which many teams do these days. Tolaj is a taller player and we know he can play up front on his own or as part of a pair and I'm not sure Wareham could do that at as well as him.

All these things contribute to providing evidence on a players potential worth to another team, that's all I'm saying and I don't think I'd be happy if we paid £1.5m for Wareham personally.

You can also add Michael Owen into that at 5ft 8in.

I have said before I think Wareham could be a Mackie-esque "off the target-mans shoulder" type striker. My feeling is that he will end up somewhere else by the end of the summer though.
