Ben Waine.

Ben Waine has scored 5 goals in 14 starts for Argyle - mainly in Cup competitions and 2 in 34 sub appearances. Most of those substitute appearances would be for the last 10 minutes or so. However, if we are generous and say his average length appearance as a substitute was 20 mins. In those 34 games that amounts to just under 8 games of full 90 minutes. So Ben's goal ratio equates to 7 goals in 23 full games or 14 over a full League season - strange but true. Not as poor as some have speculated

Hopefully he finds his level next season - unfortunately it will not be Championship level.

No but he's quick and scores goals. Anyway we're talking about Waine playing as a 9, not in Hardie's 10.
Yes , I remember Waine and Hardie together in January 2023 against Bristol Rovers (admittedly a game in another
competition) and they worked really well together and tormented the
Gas's defence.(Match report below).

Strange that we didn't recall Waine this January, (i) due to his lack of gametime at Mansfield and also (ii) Ben could now come on for 20 minutes , run tirelessly and do
some hard 'Gegenpressing' , create chances
for others and score goals in the box from the numerous crosses by Puchacz, Sorinola, Bundu or Wright etc..

Let's not forget that Ben has scored
43 league goals in 144 games in different countries and 8 goals in 22 games for the New Zealand full international team .
Almost 1 goal in 3 games in his career
so far plus assists etc..
What's more, Ben's parents are both English
and he is a dual citizen of
New Zealand and the UK which I suppose also helps as regards overseas player
visas etc..

It is not strange. He cannot make it into a league two team. We already have three dedicated strikers and two more that can play in that position. If we were recalling players who cannot get into a league two team to play in the championship I would be seriously concerned.

Mansfield are in League 1

Mansfield are at home tonight against Lincoln

Will be interesting if he is named in the 18 man squad

sorry my mistake, still lower half league 1, my point still stands.
Sometimes you just need a bit of luck and timing though. Look at Jephcott when he was recalled from Truro. Massive step up and scored plenty. He’s scored championship goals, so has something about him.

I never really saw it myself, and he clearly has not improved while out on loan. I think it would be very much a case of playing him for the sake of it just because he is on the books.

Jephcott was a funny one, I never thought he looked like a particularly good player if I am honest, but fair play he did go on a couple of incredible scoring streaks.

I think I'm right in saying that he's only scored one Championship goal.

I'd rather see Waine playing than Tijani or Obafemi. Always gives 100% and presses well, the same can't be said of the other two who are both on loan anyway. Why oh why do we have 2 loanee strikers on the fringes of the matchday squad while our own player sees his development stunted? No matter the division next season, i'd like to see Waine in the squad.

If Waine was still at HP when Muslic came in I could really have seen him being repurposed and revitalised in the same way as Cal has been. There isn't a championship level striker in there but there is a player who can succeed at lower L1 or L2. Clearly Clough doesn't rate him, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him succeed elsewhere next season.
