We used to get visited by a Little Owl, it was lovely. A few times in the summer I would be sitting out the back garden and it would be on the guttering twooting away. Then Mr Treekilller bought the house next door and was allowed to chop down a two hundred year old-plus tree because it was near his house. I understand the basic point, it was huge and the roots could have created some serious damage, but I have not seen or heard that Owl since. :(

On a similar subject, I've recently downloaded the Merlin bird app (FoC)

I'm not a twitcher BUT it's amazingly simple and we all now use it when playing golf, when he hear a different sort of birdsong.

I can now tell a robin from a sparrow and I've been amazed how many different types of parakeet there are in and around our City and especially Elfordleigh.

Give it a go, become an anorak like me. :)

You couldn't tell the difference between a Bristol City supporter and Horsham supporter?🤭

I'm definitely not a twitcher, but I've always enjoyed looking out for different birds. The moment that I installed Merlin on my phone about 3 years ago, kind of changed my life... The number of different species that I've seen has grown enormously (86 since I got the app, but I've not really paid any attention to water birds so I've probably seen quite a few more). I use the app to identify and locate birds when we are out on walks but I only log them if I actually get a clear enough sighting to be sure.

A great example has been the reappearance of Greenfinches into my world. I remember seeing Greenfinches when I was a kid (I'm 60 now) but hadn't seen one for at least 45 years. I had started to wonder whether there were any still around. But thanks to Merlin, I picked up a Greenfinch call and was rapidly able to identify its source as the small bird sitting right at the top of a nearby tree... Since then, and now that I recognise the call, I hear and see Greenfinches all the time. We'll be out and about somewhere, I'll hear the distinctive call, scan the tops of the nearby trees and say 'Greenfinch' as I point in the right direction. They are literally all over the place - just not very obvious unless you know the secret to spotting them.

There are now loads of birds that I'd hardly ever or never seen before that I've now seen multiple times, such as Yellowhammer, Raven, Siskin, Goldcrest to name just a few.

Sadly, despite my best efforts I've had little success getting birds to visit the feeders in our garden. It's odd, we live in Hartley now where there's a fair amount of greenery, but we get far less birds in the garden than we used to in our last house which was literally a stone's throw from Mutley Plan and the Hyde Park pub. We even had a pheasant there once. It doesn't help that there are so many magpies around these days (certainly around where we live).

Me & the brother used to do a bit of twitching in our yoouf.
Mainly when we got really bored tbh, but still.
Got to see loads of birds of prey & finches, woodpeckers & all sorts.
Near Kingsbridge & down towards Bantham, Thurlestone.
Is it me, or are there slightly less breeds about these days?

That Merlin app is brilliant.
I used to always take birds for granted. However, given the current climate... I've changed my tune.

There's a heron that can frequently be seen beside the new ponds at the Barn Park entrance to Central Park. I love watching herons when we are out walking. I wrote a poem about an encounter we had with a heron in Yorkshire a few summers back: King Heron (poem).

I wonder how much the milled wood was worth?

Fantastic to watch in flight herons. We have many in our locality. I have a photo of about 8 herons all standing like statues, I'll see if I can find it!
