Does anybody know if we can refuse our players to play in it. Just that "if" selected and "if" they choose to play for that country we could lose up to 8 of our squad for it in December

There isn’t another AFCON until December 2025 and no, we can’t block call ups. But we’d only lose Galloway and Bundu, if they qualified. Tijani will be some way down the pecking order for Nigeria.

Not sure who the other five supposedly are? Maybe some with dual nationality, Gyabi springs to mind, but he’s played for England at all youth levels.

Thought Issaka was Welsh. Wales not likely to qualify for African Nations Cup.

Most of ours aren’t full internationals, so likely to be a bigger problem for clubs other than Argyle.

I deliberately put in if twice when saying about it and have stated his dual nationality where he can play for an African nation.

FIFA rules prevent clubs from not releasing their players for these completions.

Even if we could, why would we? Would you want to stop a European player playing in the Euros?

I agree with your general point, but the African Cup of Nations is always in the middle of the season so is definitely more inconvenient than the Euros.

I think there's a rule in place that if the player is selected, but doesn't go for any reason, they can't play for their club until the nation is knocked out.

The chances of all 8 still being with us in December 2025, and in most cases having improved considerably to have the opportunity to be selected, is absolutely zero.

You seem to be struggling to find something to worry about!

No not worried hence me using the word if twice, I did realise it's unlikely that they will but was surprised when it was a third of our current squad that theoretically could be affected. Just wondered if a club could refuse because say a club like Leeds had the same numbers. More likely they would have a greater number than us called up. Whatever club over the timespan could greatly affect relegation/promotion.

Well he's a Dutch U21 player although that doesn't stop in playing for Nigeria (I think). Depends on whether he has aspirations of playing in the full Dutch side.

I don't there there is any question a player should go and play for their country, wherever it is. That should be one of the considerations when bringing a new player in. Ideally it adds to their value and experience as well.
