Its wrong to call anyone greedy, when the facts aren't known, but my gut feel this is exactly the issue here and we are right to move on.
The usual issue of location, one would confidently assume is not an issue here, so next comes the length of contract, considering Adams has declared it goes beyond the end of the season, Argyle were prepared to offer a 12, 18 or 24 month contract to a player who is lacking match fitness and has had injury issues. Even as an outsider looking in, i think you would call the club as being fair.
The one ingredient missing is the salary, we dont know it (we'll no doubt have friend's of friends confirming figures from £250 a week to £2500 a week all of which will be gospel) - but in this instance clearly this appears to be the issue.
Football is a fickle business but anyone offering Joe a long contract for stupid money deserve to get stung.

Adams has ruled it out. We move on, which is good news in my book. Too risky.

Yep. Chris Errington has tweeted this morning at the Thursday presser.

Sounds like he may have other irons in the fire, hopefully someone with a better injury record who would jump at the chance of signing.

...and is a proven goal scorer, but also a free agent. Not asking for much then!

I think the gap is the replacement for Sarcevic so maybe an out and out striker is not so much a priority

It did seem to make perfect sense, which is the annoying thing.

A player in possibly the worst period of his career can reboot it somewhere that is 1) a comfortable and familiar environment, and 2) though being comfortable and familiar, will also be light years ahead of where he left it off the pitch and on the up. All with him as a talisman.

Never mind.

Why is that Argyle can't compete financially with other clubs in the bottom two divisions when Home Park has some of the largest gates outside the Championship ?

Forget this stuff about Mason not fitting into the formation. Adams obviously wanted him but did not have the playing budget. Yet other clubs in League One and Two can afford him it seems.

It never really felt like a deal was going to happen. It didn't feel right when Adams talked about the offered deal - because he never does that. And despite some people saying Mason never wanted to leave and was desperate to come "home", there was never any evidence of enthusiasm for this from the player. Let's move on.

Exactly. The usual excuses of location and being away from family and friends didn't matter in this case so it comes down to money.
Our offer probably reflected Mason's injury history and lack of game time, just 31 minutes of first team football in the last four months.

The team has moved on since the end of 2018, Mason would have been nice to have and not desperate to have. He probably needs a month to raise his fitness and with his history he might have struggled with Adams' double training routines and broke down again.

To be fair we have zero evidence it comes down to money.

For all we know Adams told Mason he was going to be an option from the bench and Mason didn't fancy it.

Or, we weren't offering a long enough contract.

To jump to "he's a greedy footballer" straight away is isn't really very fair, especially when there isn't a single person on here who wouldn't move companies if it meant he got his wages doubled.

Maybe it was money, maybe it wasn't - let's not it become a pasoti fact though, eh?

The whole situation makes no sense at all and stinks of a PR stunt from the club. Everything is here for Mason, he has a property on The Hoe, his family and friends are here and Argyle are a club moving in the right direction on and off the pitch. We must have offered a really shoddy deal that even one of our own has to turn his nose up at playing for the club.

It’s has all the makings of a cheeky bid to lure a half decent player here.

We had very little to lose.

Why let a lack of information and facts get in the way of a good slating?

I think there is very reasonable evidence that location and length of contract weren't the issue.
It doesn't leave a lot else!

You keep banging on with the same old record, but attendances in this day and age are just a small influence on club budgets.

Perhaps he didn’t want to work for the manager. Until/if he says why he didn’t come back we will only ever be speculating.
