Long ball - why?

The main difference from this season to last! But why? Lack of confidence or was DA telling them to? Last season we played some great football; one touch pass and move, width, overlapping. Yesterday was just boot it forward to Taylor at every opportunity. Also how isolated was Tafari Moore! Or do we give credit to Southend for stopping us playing?

Sounds like Moore was isolated this week and Riley last week, perhaps the two lefties in the middle 3 leaves us unbalanced?

Because of the high pressing and closing down from Southend.

They got there tactics spot on yesterday and made us panic and we couldn’t get any real time on the ball.

We couldn't hold the ball so why risk playing it out from the back and losing it deep in your own half?

When they were outplaying us in the middle, cutting it out with a long ball may have appealed because if you get it to your target, you may create a chance but if you don't get it to your target, at least they have to build up again from their half.

It wasn't pretty and it wasn't succesful but our midfield was woeful yesterday until Yann came on.

Kept us in the game with the constant hoofing the ball towards Taylor.Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

It was exactly that. Southend did their homework and closed down our centre backs who then had to hurry and hit the ball long. We do like to start play from keeper to either centre back and then pass into Fox or one of the two advanced full backs. Southend stopped all that and made Fox anonymous.

Plan B seems to be hit it long which will only work if Taylor wins the ball and hold it up for Carey and Lameiras but unfortunately those two are not firing on all cylinders at the moment.

So we need a plan C. :)

People will hate me saying this, but the long balls are probably down to a lack of quality.

I'm not yet convinced by the centre backs. Last season we had Vyner, who was calm under pressure and had the pace to rectify his mistakes.

There are also a lot of new players in the squad who are trying to figure each other out. There were not many tests against quality opposition in pre-season and that must also have some affect. Even the players from last season are a bit hit and miss. Carey looks good, but Lamerias is as inconsistent as ever and will be lucky to keep his shirt.

It’s concerning me that 2 poor teams have worked us out already this season! Southend will be mid table at best and Walsall will go down. We made Southend look like Brazil yesterday. I’m not saying we have a divine right to beat anyone but compare how we destroyed them last season playing some beautiful football to yesterday’s dross

Walsall drew away at Scunthorpe yesterday. Why are some so arrogant to argue they are good as relegated? They had no obvious weaknesses against us.

Two main reasons.

1. Edwards & Wootton don't look as good in the distribution department as Vyner & Bradley were.

2. Our midfield is too weak therefore seem to get bypassed at times, we need someone with more energy and bite, such as a Sarcevic, Diagouraga or even Makasi, mainly to just get hold of the ball in the middle and get us moving.

Hopefully soon, Sarcevic is a much more important player than people give him credit for, he's dynamic, energetic and good at getting us to transition from defence to attack quickly, without having to hoof it.

If we do have to resort to the long ball, then someone needs to be closer to Taylor so that when/if he nods it down we are the ones who keep possession. Most of the time yesterday they won the ball because we had no green shirts near enough. We seemed off the pace all over the pitch and got easily knocked off the ball. Agree that we miss someone of Vyner's quality at the back - Nelson was the same type of player.

That’s because Ruben and Carey were too deep trying to help the defence/midfield being the ball out or too deep trying to hassle Southend when they had the ball.

The moment we got the ball we lumped it up field and Taylor was on his own against Turner who won the battle 8 out of 10 times. The rare occasion Taylor did bring the ball down he was too isolated to bring anyone else into play.

I really think DA has made a mistake not bringing in at least 1 CB who has more pace (but possibly less aerial ability) who can pass the ball and is decent when pressured. He has brought in 3 CB’s none of which are quickish nor possess that sort of ability on the ball to help us build from the back.

It is early days though, maybe a decent partnership can be formed with more time..
