Late P&R buses yesterday so got a bus to Golden Hind and walked across the park. Very stressed, very late, very porkily tired!

Only positive was spotting a parakeet behind Pound House. Never seen one in Plymouth before, seen loads in that there Lundun (Kew).

Anyone else seen them? Anyone a knowledgeable twitcher?

I say positive but are they 'bad' for native wildlife?

Yes that is where I was, walking along the path behind Pounds House. Really pleasant way of getting to the game .. if you aren't running late!!

I thought I'd read about them before. Apparently there are about 30 of them up there:

I attach a couple of replies I got from wildlifeindevon.org who record sightings of 'unusual' wildlife. Might go a bit earlier next home game and spend some quality time in Parakeet Park!!

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for the sighting, much appreciated.

It was almost certainly a ringneck parakeet. They were virtually
unknown in Devon until late last year when a small group turned up
which eventually settled at Ford Park Cemetery & Central Park. This
year at least 2 pairs have bred and there are now around 30 of them.

Hi Dave,

It seems likely that the Plymouth birds are from a local escape / release.
Although the London birds have increased massively in numbers they haven't
spread too far, The closest colony was in Dorset but that seems to have died
out few years ago.

They have done well in their first year, at least two pairs have bred and we
only know of one casualty so far ( taken by a Peregrine ), they have very
few natural predators.

They don't compete with much native wildlife, they are getting most of their
food from bird feeders and it is likely that local people are increasing the
amount of food put out to compensate. Woodpeckers nest in holes that are far
too small for the parakeets. The only species I can think of that would
compete for nest holes would be some tree nesting ducks ( none in the area )
or Jackdaws. Jackdaws are willing to nest in chimneys so have plenty of
available alternatives.

Cheers

Paul

I had a look at front of Pounds house early Sunday morning saw about 20 plus who appear to have nested under eaves and burrowed their way through rotten woodwork. The thing that struck me was other bigger birds seemed to be in awe of them even massive seagulls .Well we now have a green Airforce !
