Pressing the oppostion has vanished....

Last season we defended better when pressing the opposition in their half of the pitch.

It wasnt just left to the front man to chase shadows. Lamerias and Carey would push up to. Two out of the three midfielders would also push onto their midfield.

Before this happened we use to let the oppostion come into our own half. Often not making a challenge until they were at least half way inside our own half. The oppostion defence and midfield would just play it around simply and with ease. They would pick Argyle off easily by passing down the sides of us and getting into a lot of space. Exactly what we are seeing now.

So now we are back to their horrible, negeative tactics of not pressing the opposition players. For two and a half seasons we had this similar style. Then it seemed to changed for a few months. A more positive, attacking mentality when approaching games, was implemented.

Now we have gone back to tactics that I thought we had realised just were outdated and negative. These tactics may of been successful in league two, in terms of results, but they are similar to the style of play we seem to have employed currently this season. These tactics simply don't work and are what allows the oppostion to get possession and create chances easily.

Its mind boggling why Adams has reverted back to tactics involving sitting back that simply just dont work.

Agree mostly, but that pressing tactic requires deep understanding throughout the whole team almost like a strategy in itself, you don’t just say ‘right lads we’re going to press today’. Who presses, when do they press, who covers the space behind A when A presses? Otherwise you’re just committing yourself and leaving yourself wide open for the opposition to exploit.

If you look back to last season, we got our defensive solidity right before starting to press and take the game to the opposition. I suspect DA doesn’t feel that we have the solidity or defensive understanding yet, with a largely new defence.

That’s another issue of course, because at the moment it looks like he’s made a big mistake and should have pulled out the stops to keep Bradley, so we didn’t have to build again on foundations of sand. Equally it could be this defence DOES soon click and we start motoring again.

We simply don’t know, which is partly why it’s so frustrating to read this apocalyptic doom mongering that we’re as good as down after 8 games (not you, Mickey), especially as we turned a similar situation around comfortably last season.

We can't get forward quick enough and then we most certainly can't get back quick enough :(

I think Ness was a big miss today. I thought O'keefe was the one who'd vanished!
As does Grant so maybe not so much the player, more the position and the role of which they play?
