Charlton pubs

A specialist subject of mine as I live next door to the Cutty Sark!

Recommended:

Greenwich Union or Richard III on Royal Hill (next door to each other), for real ale/craft beers, fabulous pubs

The Cutty Sark at Ballast Quay, 18th century and on the river, very good food.

Gipsy Moth in Greenwich Town Centre, right by the Cutty Sark, a bit touristy but nice and big with a huge beer garden

The Old Brewery, in the Naval College grounds - a bit expensive but a great setting and with a really good beer selection, also with a top beer garden.

For the hungry, Greenwich market is unsurpassed in London for street food of all cuisines.

I'd recommend heading to the area around the Cutty Sark pre-game as the concentration of pubs/eateries/things to see is ridiculous around there and it's a 5 minute train journey (10/15 minutes on the bus) to The Valley.

Hoping to see a lot of Greens around this weekend

Group of us going to The Antigallican, itā€™s not a great pub if youā€™re after drink variety or something different, but itā€™s big and itā€™s right outside Charlton station and 5 minutes from the ground. Believe it is an away fans pub quite often.

Rumours were that it is closed down, but ive read it is still open on matchdays. If it is closed weā€™ll go to the Rose of Denmark, which is a few hundred meters down the road from the Antigallican.

To each their own, I find both quite grotty and horrible but if they're full of Argyle fans I'm sure they'd be OK. The Rose Of Denmark is opposite a Sainsbury's, seems a bit of a waste to bypass the lovely pubs of Greenwich so you're ten minutes closer to the ground but I'm not your boss

There's a beer festival in Deptford which I'll be at before and after the game, let's hope there's something to drink to to celebrate!

As a South East Londoner I second Andy's recommendations as good places to go. If you're willing to go off the beaten track a bit for something more interesting there's the Pelton Arms which is my favourite pub in the area and a short bus ride from The Valley.

Just to echo all of the above, some great pubs in this part of London. Plenty to choose from in Greenwich and indeed Borough Market. I too love the Pelton Arms.

Canā€™t wait for Saturday!!

The Pelton Arms is great, a proper old school London boozer - to the extent that they used it as The Nag's Head in the Only Fools & Horses prequel series. A little bit off the beaten track for anyone not familiar with the area, but well worth seeking out.

If it's a nice day weather wise... Is the Anchor and Hope worth a visit? https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restauran ... gland.html

Not too far from the ground and overlooks the Thames.

...not sure to be honest, I've never been. It's really, really worth pointing out that this isn't one of those grounds where you need to be in a pub within a few minutes walk of the ground. The area around the ground itself is fine but a bit grotty, there's far far better alternatives very close by.

Have been to the Hope and Anchor quite a few times. Nice little pub and it has a few benches opposite the front with a good view of the river and Thames barrier. Would say its about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the Valley from it.
Little hard to find if you don't know it, a big Asda around the corner as well for normal priced food.

Fair play, thanks for your advice. If itā€™s that grim Iā€™m already warming to the idea of a green takeover in Greenwich and then a train across to Charlton at 2. Would be good fun in itself!

The Antigallican, if it's open of course.
Went to recently when Truro played Charlton. Its right next to the train station BUT it is sparse, dark and feels as if the owners have started to move out.

From Charlton Forum

For pub close to the ground ...
the Rose of Denmark, 296 Woolwich Rd, London SE7 7AL ,
nicer pub, better beers. Only a bit of a walk from the station. Before the game they open up the front of the pub, so you can drink next to the street out the front, and in the smallish beer garden to the side of the pub as well.
Turn left coming out of Charlton rail station, down to traffic lights by The Antigallican. Turn left again - and walk up the Woolwich Road A 206 to the pub.

But for me, this Saturday, I will mostly be drinking in the Anchor & Hope pub :scarf:

Sussex Greens also drinking in "The Rose of Denmark", based on local advice. Apparently "The Antigallican" is not great these days. You need wipe your feet on the way out...

My advice as a local is that The Rose Of Denmark is a bit of a hole

Sure you'll have a good time if there's a load of you in there though, it's close to the ground

It's been a while since I've been there but I remember the White Swan in Charlton being decent enough. The only downside is that it's a bit of a walk up the hill from Charlton station!
