1) Start for Vyner ahead of Songo'o in the absence of the unfortunate Edwards. Church took a place on the bench alongside returning Taylor-Sinclair and Cooper, who retained his place despite Letheren's fitness. Wylde and Jervis the ones making way. All the players wore "Edwards 5" training tops. A nice touch. Argyle support on 5 minutes was class.

2) Wigan were lucky to keep 11 men on the pitch when two ugly fouls in quick succession left Sarcevic and Taylor on he ground. They survived as clearly the referee hadn't seen it. Officials failed to see a foul off the ball on Carey and then a clear foul on Fox in the build up to their second. The penalty was so obvious that it wasn't even an even-ing up of the game.

3) Carey's penalty was well placed and sent Walton the wrong way but a silly free-kick on the halfway gave Wigan their first, a ball played across the defence. Their second was similar but from the other side of the pitch. No free-kick but Fox was moved out of the way illegally before the cross was put in.

4) I felt Argyle had the best of the first 45 and were unlucky not to be further ahead when the penalty went in. Lameiras guilty of over playing it at times. Taylor battled well too but with little assistance from the referee. Vyner had one plundering run forward and otherwise looked solid. He's certainly got some learning to do but you can see the potential.

5) Sarcevic was limping for a good part of the first half and I half expected to see Songo'o come out for the second. As it was it was deep into the second half before the poor Lameiras was replaced by Ainsworth. With 5 to go Grant replaced Taylor who had another good game, when allowed to by the referee.

6) Wigan continued their strong arm tactics and picked up three quick yellow cards including one for an incident in the tunnel at half-time. A Carey free-kick was pushed away by Walton and then Sawyer almost chipped Matthews but the ball bounced just over the bar. Sarcevic managed to put a good 1v1 chance over.

7) Argyle were still playing quite well but the need to push forward was playing into Wigan's hands through their counter-attacking play. Lameiras had a poor game and kept trying the complicated when the obvious was the better choice. The limited nature of the midfield trio was exposed at times.

8 ) The third came from a corner with Vyner deflecting a header into his own net. Argyle ran out of ideas and Adams flung on Church for Ness. Ness and Sarcevic had poor second halves and Cook proved the better tactician. We didn't deserve to lose by 2 goals but we looked clueless once the third went in. Wigan weren't exceptional and I think had we had Diagouraga.....

9) Argyle finally met a team who could finish and Wigan were a step up from recent opposition. We need a replacement for Diagouraga, Ness and Sarcevic are not at the standard to go forward if Adams is going to persist with this formation but most of us knew that. We did well in the first half but were second best for the second 45.

Good point about the Toums replacement, desperately needed- centre mid is clearly an area we need to be more dominant and mobile, Ness, Sarcevic, Fox, Songoā€™o all have limitations in that position. Hope the search is fruitful, shame Lowe hasnā€™t signed but you never know....

Thanks for the update, again- frustrated I couldnā€™t be there today!

The best team lost. Referee was inept, Wigan cynical and streetwise but other than the goals they didn't threaten. Stick a decent midfielder or two in there and we are a seriously decent team. Ness a passenger as always, Sarcevic did so much good work in filling holes ans nicking the ball only to give it away, always gets in good positions but cant finish.

Iā€™ve been one of Sarcevicā€™s critics but thought he had a good game today. Ness looks like player whoā€™s legs have gone. Looks laboured in his movement. Foxy was outstanding.

Fine margins. Had Sarcevic been more composed with his chance and the same with Church at then end itā€™s 3-3.

I think I was the only one who thought Carey had won us a second pen second half as there werenā€™t many appeals.

Iā€™m very disappointed because we gave everything and looked as good as them. 3-1 flattered them I thought.

Not at all disappointed. We outplayed a team with a budget that dwarfs ours in that 1st half. It's a disgrace we went in behind at Half time.

Although a clown on the touchline he always gives a fair and balanced post match interview.

How did Church look when he came on?

Iā€™m usually gutted after a defeat but not today. On that performance we will beat most teams in this league, but Wigan are outstanding, and you can see why they have one of the best away records in the efl. I agree with Paul Cooke, we didnā€™t deserve to lose, but Wiganā€™s class must make them nailed-on promotion certainties.

I know itā€™s difficult but Iā€™d sacrifice both Ness and Sarcevic for another Toumbs standard midfielder.

They both offer small bits but neither ever really make a massive difference.

I think weā€™re still short or ā€˜thatā€™ midfielder and maybe another loan wide man that can play either flanks to challenge Ruben and Carey. Ainsworth and Grant arenā€™t up to that standard.

Wigan were just that little bit better than us where it mattered, solid defence and breaking quickly and clinically finishing their first two chances. Their central defender Dan Burn 33 was very good but Taylor gave him a helluva game. I thought Ness was OK. Some of the off the ball antics by Wigan were disgraceful and the linesman on the Lyndhurst side was a clown along with the ref. We played well but our weaknesses in centre midfield are glaringly obvious.

Can only echo this. They reminded me of the Wigan that rose up through the leagues under Jewell . No fans , no flair but ruthlessly efficient. And with a ref as weak the one today we were always going to be up against it.
Still , I came away feeling positive. Play like that against most teams and weā€™d get a win more often than not.
Special praise for Ness. Played very well today and games will only get him sharper.

We didn't deserve to lose 3-1 and for most of the game we were the better team, if any neutral was watching the game and didn't know the league positions there's a good chance he would pick Argyle as being top of the league.
It was a cracking game of football.

The stats show we dominated possession and had more attempts on goal but despite not putting us under any great pressure Wigan managed to score three goals and from our point of view all three were soft goals to concede.

The turning point of the game was during the second half when at 2-1 Sarcevic missed a glorious chance and from that point it was a different game, he really needed to score after we had created so much pressure on the Wigan defence.

We made Wigan look very ordinary and they couldn't cope with our work rate and pressing and were clearly rattled during the first half.
Wigan are a horrible niggly team - elbows off the ball, pulling of shirts, gestures to the fans - and number 5 Morsy the captain should have had three yellow cards instead of just one. Credit to the Wigan fans for travelling such a long way but their support was poor and they only made some noise at 3-1.
I suppose credit to Wigan for weathering the storm we created, lesser teams would have crumbled.

The ref lost control early in the game and allowed Wigan to utilise their off the ball tactics, he did award one penalty to us but also should have given us a second penalty when Lameiras was fouled in the area.

Zak Vyner had a good debut, he has pace and composure and plays like Curtis Nelson and looks like him in stature, just a few inches shorter.

Despite being our best player during the first half of the season Yann Songo'o was again harshly overlooked in favour of Vyner.
In a swirling wind we started the game well and pressed Wigan all over the pitch, we passed well in midfield with David Fox sitting deep and knitting everything together.
At five minutes everyone stood and applauded Ryan Edwards, it was a great gesture.

Bradley had a header saved and Threlkeld did well to put a Wigan player under pressure as a cross came in and thankfully the Wigan player headed over.

Morsy kicked Sarcevic in the head but didn't receive a yellow card.

Our goal came after Fox made a fantastic pass to Carey who jinked his way into the area and from a tight angle was about to shoot but was brought down by Dunkley, the ref awarded the penalty and Carey ignored Walton's antics in the Wigan goal and thumped the ball pass him.
It was the first goal Wigan have conceded since November.

We couldn't hold the lead when just two minutes later Carey lost possession, Ness tried to win the ball back but committed a foul, the ref allowed Wigan to take the free kick from wherever they wanted, we didn't defend the cross and Grigg slotted in. 1-1 and undeserved.

Carey was caught off the ball, it looked to be an elbow to the face.
Taylor was caught while on the ball, it looked to be an elbow in the face.

Lameiras was about to head the ball but was bundled over the in the penalty area and the ref didn't award the obvious penalty.

Just before half time the ref waved play on despite Fox being pushed over, Wigan broke quickly and Massey easily scored, another soft goal to concede and the three minutes of injury time looked to be well over at the time Wigan scored. 1-2 and undeserved.
Just before that goal we should have had a corner, the ref and linesman didn't know what to give so settle on a goal kick to Wigan. It was a definite corner. Fine margins.

It was good to see the structured warm-up for the substitutes still continues at half time.

The second half was much the same, we pressed and probed and played nice little triangles in midfield and Wigan offered nothing as an attacking threat.
We just couldn't find that one good chance until Sarcevic was through on goal but blazed over. It was a big miss because at 2-2 and Wigan struggling to contain us we might have gone on to win the game.

Carey had a 25 yard free kick well saved by Walton.

A rare adventure forward for Wigan resulted in a corner, the big lump of a centre back Burn headed in the third goal with the aid of a deflection and then for some apparent reason made a gesture to the Devonport End and continued with the gesture to the Lyndhurst side as he ran back up the pitch. It just about summed up the horrible Wigan team. 1-3 and undeserved.

Apart from that goal Wigan's best effort of the second half was a Sawyer back pass that luckily bounced over the crossbar. It was reminiscent of Paul Connolly actually scoring an own goal several years ago.

We changed shape and brought on Church, Grant and Ainsworth but the tempo and attacking play we had for 69 minutes of this match was gone.

If we play like this for the rest of the season we'll finish in the top half of the league.
Taylor, Bradley and Sawyer all picked up injuries during the match so hopefully they will be ok.

Fox was outstanding in midfield, his passing and keeping the ball moving helped us keep Wigan under pressure.
Despite his glaring miss Sarcevic had a good game, Ness was steady, he obviously lacks the muscle and strength of Diagouraga.

Taylor battled well up front and took a lot of hits from the Wigan defenders, including one 'challenge' off the ball.
Carey tormented the Wigan defenders all game, as did Lameiras but he does run out of steam during the second half - as he actually finished a game this season? He also wasted at least two corners by taking them short.

Threlkeld is getting better and better and is now getting forward more now that is he getting fitter.
Matthews didn't have too much to do and still opts to punch the ball instead of catching it.

Little Curtis Nelson had a very good debut, you can see he needs to learn how to be tougher.

The other new signing Simon Church was a late sub and did ok, he had one chance that he headed just over the bar.

With a stronger set of officials we might have got something from this game.

Man of the Match - Fox.

Matthews 6, Threlkeld 7, Vyner 7, Bradley 7, Sawyer 7, Fox 8, Ness 6, Sarcevic 7, Carey 7, Lameiras 7, Taylor 7. Subs Ainsworth 5, Church 6, Grant n/a.
