(how about) (Championship Loanee) Gustav Engvall

So apparently we are in for a Championship Loanee. Given our previous links with Bristol City (Bobby Reid, Joe Bryan, Garita) and need for a striker I wouldn't be surprised if we are after Gustav Engvall. Higher up the pecking order than Garita and listed in their first team squad (whilst Garita is in the U23s).

It seems he has spent the first half of the season on loan to DjurgƄrdens IF in Sweden where he has been highly praised (the Swedish season runs from April to November), before returning to Bristol City in November. However has not been given a shot in the City first team, so wouldn't be surprised if they are looking to send him out to a League 1 club for the rest of the season.

Name: Gustav Engvall
Height: 184cm
Club: Bristol City (Championship)
Age: 21
Nationality: Swedish
Position: Forward

Derek Adams is hoping to make the second addition to his Plymouth Argyle squad of the January transfer window in the next few days.

The Pilgrimsā€™ boss is working on a deal for a loan signing from a Championship club.

Adams said: ā€œWe are hopeful of completing another loan next week, so thatā€™s where we are in that situation.ā€

Played nine minutes of Bristol City's first game of the season so if he's been on loan after that he can't play for a club other than Bristol City or the one he was on loan at until the end of the season.

The Swedish League overlaps with the English League, so in this instance Engvall would be eligible to play for a third club (e.g. Argyle).

"During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs. However, a player may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season if he has moved between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (ie, start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring). This is only allowed if he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs."

Man, you do come up with some obscure players, I'll give you that! Methinks one has been playing a little too much Football Manager! :)

That rule still apply even if the loan was non-domestic?

Yes, though HKG has pointed out that in this case he would be able to.

Thanks. Always thought it was an English club to club thing.

Engvall came on as a sub for a much-changed Bristol City side during their FA Cup fixture with Watford on Saturday - with most of the first team being rested for their League Cup Semi Final against Man City. He must have impressed as he made it on the subs bench last night at the Ethiad, which suggests he might be back in Lee Johnson's first team plans (and an Argyle loan might be off the cards).

Will be interesting to see if he features against Norwich on Saturday. Not giving up just yet!

I went to that game and he gave a good account of himself. Looked like he could play the lone striker role well and looked a bit of a battering ram. Confidence appeared to be a problem though, he burst through at one point and looked destined to score, but he took forever to shoot and before he had a defender had caught up with him and taken the ball.

Interestingly this week Bristol Post are reporting that Engvall is seeking a way out of Bristol City. However it's unlikely City will get their asking price for the attacker (apparently Ā£1million), so a loan move to another club in England looking more likely. Perhaps Argyle could give him a platform to put himself in the shop window for the summer?

"Reports in Sweden have suggested that that Swedish striker wants to leave Bristol City. The forward, who has had two loan spells at Djurgarden since signing for the Robins, seems to still be out of favour at the club despite featuring against Watford in the FA Cup last weekend. The money City want for the attacker might be a stumbling blog for some clubs, while City could look to get the 21-year-old out on loan in England." Bristol Post, 11th Jan 2018

Hi all, Bristol City fan in peace (based in Roborough so not all bad!).Talk of the office today amongst the "in-the-know" Robins is that our Swedish striker Gustav Engvall is on his way to you guys on loan.

Think he would be great signing for both parties, seems as though you are in need of a striker and he is in need of some competitive football. Clearly talented and lots of City fans would like to see him given more of a chance, but hasn't been able to break into the first team behind Reid, Taylor, Woodrow and Duric. With Diedhiou coming back from injury his game time is looking even more limited. He clearly has talent (impressed on loan to Djurgardens), and we spent Ā£1.5million to sign him only 18 months ago. Get him going and he will be scoring for fun in League 1.

If you can work the same magic on Engvall as you did with Bobby Reid and Joe Bryan we will be eternally grateful!

Cheers Roborough - had a few colleagues based in our Bristol office message me this morning after hearing similar. Certainly sounds like a good fit for all involved.

In the current system we are playing Ryan Taylor up top on his own, who you may remember from his time at Ashton Gate, with two attacking midfielders in support. Our manager seems to prefer sticking to a successful formula, so imagine whoever we bring in will be in a similar mould in order to play the same system should Taylor get injured, or as competition if good enough.

From what you've seen do you reckon Engvall would be able to play the lone striker role?

Nice try but only one username is allowed, sorry. I've deactivated the account with just one post.

Sincerely hope a loan move will materialise for this lad! He looks quality & i'm surprised he's not knocking on the door of Bristol City's first team.
