Jephcott is now playing as a link striker coming deep to collect the ball and lay it off.

He was good earlier in the season and over the last one and a half seasons when he played as a striker and scoring inside the penalty area or even inside the six yard box.

In effect, the team has lost a goal poacher but gained a midfielder and it looks like it has affected Jephcott's confidence.

I think the biggest and obvious differences that the Wycombe and Wigan games have shown is our ability to cope with their greater physicality, which is common to all championship teams. Both teams beat us to nearly every 50:50 ball, and both teams gave a physical press in midfield significantly stronger than all the other teams we have played this year. Newly promoted championship clubs struggle in the Premier for the same reason imo, where tactical and technical skills can be undone by opponents equally skilled but stronger athletically, with greater pace and power.

I spent the final ten minutes of yesterday’s game in a bottom row seat, and close up I have never seen a group of players looking more knackered, including theirs, again reflecting the greater physicality at this level.

I think we’ve got to be realistic. Team building doesn’t start and finish over a third of the season. Good as most of our squad are, we must continue to be a work in progress, and if we finish in mid-table but are clearly making progress improving overall squad quality then I will be happy.

I agree we have been overachieving, but let's not forget that we have just played Sat-Tue-Sat-Tue-Sat and I feel the 90th min winner from Wigan came from defensive tiredness, not weakness.

We have a whole week to recuperate and a winnable cup match for the team to regroup and get a bit of confidence back.

We still have some equally difficult games to go before we get to the halfway point in the season, but it will be interesting to see where we are at that point in time.

I feel that the play-offs will be our target for the rest of the season, and did we really expect that before the season started?

Let's get behind the boys and see where they take us.

We are a work in progress. Anyone who thought we were going to storm the league after last season is deluded, and I don't understand the criticism of the side after a few bad results. This side is good enough to get us to where we are at the moment but short of a few players to get us up. I think people underestimate how strong the relegated teams are when it comes tactics, "game management" and their physical strength. Players aren't automatons and have bad days. After the Ipswich game they were a team of heroes worthy of the freedom of the city with a keeper capable of playing in the Premier League. After today, in many people's eyes, they are weak, disorganised, not strong enough, with a keeper who has a crisis of confidence. The manager has been out thought tactically and Ryan Broom is better than Danny Mayor who is better than Ryan Broom who is... etc. etc. What we have is a good squad that tries it's hardest every time they take to the field and are sometimes not good enough - that's just a fact of life.

Rant over and out.

Broom only 5?
I'd mind yourself, the locals will be at your door with pitchforks
Wow UTL, give this anti Broom comments a rest. its starting to come over as very childish.

You obviously prefer Mayor to Broom and without doubt Mayor is our most talented player but, boy, is he frustrating to watch. He offers so much when he gets the ball but then, nothing. For player of his talent he should have scored and offered more assists than he has. People commented he was the only player driving us forward yesterday and was surprised to see his subbed. Well, we had the one shot on target so I guess nothing happened much when he got to the box.

As for your snide comments re Broom and 'lack' of goals, He has been here for 17 games, Mayor has been here for 3 seasons. Again, not alot of payback from Mayor. And as for Broom's fortunate goal with the aid of a puddle, at least he bust a gut to get into the box and finish. I suspect Mayor would have been on the half way line looking on. And Broom has shown with his goal at Accrington that given the chance he will let fly and have a shot, something we all wish our forwards would do more often.

As has been pointed out, the stats show (anything you want) that with Broom starting we have been more successful and I personally think he also offers more physicality in midfield. Four games ago people were clamouring to get Broom signed up, but after a few defeats he's suddenly the source of your scorn.

You prefer Mayor, and what I have seen I prefer Broom, but want both in the squad. Lets just have differing opinions without the snide remarks as both players I am sure try their best when they pull on the green jersey.

"Leave the side remarks aside"
"I suspect Mayor would have been on the halfway line watching" (he actually made that goal).
😂
It was totally the wrong decision to bring Broom on yesterday. A draw would have been a decent result. But Broom speeds up the game in a way that is sometimes useful but yesterday handed initiative to Wigan.
Same as at Oxford when Mayor coming on for Broom, keeping the ball and not going gung ho like a wind up toy probably won us the game

Absolutely this for me. The physicality of Wigan and Wycombe were so noticable, and having clinical physical units up front wins big games and sadly we don’t have that ie….

Charlton had Washington
Wycombe had Vokes
Wigan had two big lads (can’t remember names)

hopefully Ennis will bring that to the team when he returns, but how long is that going to be?

unpopular opinion, but Cooper is a big worry for me, awful mistake for the first goal yesterday and doesn’t seem to save many shots unless they are straight at him 🤷‍♂️.

Why use LJ as that link? Why not DM or Garrick playing infront of PC and RB?

Jepphers is a poacher, not a link up CAM or CF

And we need a better right sided wing back. Someone who can get up the pitch and play on the oppositions FB. Edwards is good as a defending WB or FB but weak at going forward

That’s how I see it. We should be using Broome in there with Mayor playing as he did yesterday. That would leave us with one up front, Jephcott to be a poacher when the opposition sit back or Hardie for some pace on the break if the opposition want to push forward.

I think you are the one talking absolute rubbish. You say the defence is a 'big problem,' so how CAN we be 'top of table material'? Let's put a winger who can't defend in there. That would help wouldn't it?!!!
You miss the point. We are good enough to be top. But we need a tactical rethink. Because we played poorly and we have a defender who's off form. Which means we need cover at left back, or a change to 4-5-1.

An act of frustration probably from a manager who's just watched him miss a really good chance. And had he scored it, we might have gone on to win.

Did anyone else notice the shake of the head from Jephcott when he'd passed Lowe heading to the bench ?
Yes, and i don't think it helped when Lowe completely ignored Jeffers as he went to the dugout, a pat on the shoulder, and maybe "not your day son" comment would have helped, poor from the manager.

I don't get it. We are 'good enough to be top'... but we are not??? The more realistic amongst us will be absolutely delighted with the play offs. I fear even that will be step too far this season.

Spot on. Worrying thing is I dont think Lowe sees it. He is a purist and wants to play the beautiful game. Dont we all but this the third division. At the recent London branch q & a he was asked about getting a more physical striker and he denied that we needed one. 3 defeats later I wonder if he has changed his mind. You learn a lot more about your team when you lose.

3 at the back needs an energetic attacking game, which takes the pressure off the defence and maximises attacking options in midfield and up front, in a 3-5-2

If the team plays a low energy, insipid game it doesn't work. The result is a lot more pressure on your 3 defenders.

So, we need people like Broom, Houghton, Camera to play well. When they don't we're in trouble.

Opposition managers have stifled Houghton and Camera. Which means we need to react tactically.

This doesn't mean we, as a Club must now roll back into our hole of 'same old Argyle' and settle for mid table obscurity.

It needs a quick tactical re-think and adoption of a plan B when needed.

A tall centre forward, a good left back and an assertive midfielder will help a lot, if they're available in January.
