I thought Mayor was our best player, he tried to make things happen and was targeted by Wycombe.
Mayor was also on an orange card in the first half and did well not to be provoked by the Wycombe players.

Opinions, eh!

His booking was poor too! The ref let so many tackles go and then booked DM for his first tackle that wasn’t even worthy of a card. I agree he was our best player

Both strikers were far poorer than Mayor tonight, and offered Mayor almost nothing in terms of movement ahead of him, but I doubt they’ll get their own bashing threads.

Very little movement, altho tbf Wycombe sat so deep there was not much space to run into, and they were also eaten alive by the very strong centre backs who beat them to the ball every time.

Mayor created all our flickers of promise, drawing defenders in and then momentarily putting them on the back foot with a sudden change of pace.

What he really needs is a striker who can he can play off, as Carey and Lameiras had with Ryan Taylor. Hardie and Jephcott aren't strong enough to hold the ball up in crowded penalty areas so Mayor has to create space by dribbling past people rather than through inter-changes. This is much harder to do so he ends up shooting from further out, on the run, with more defenders around him and misses more often than not but in a game like tonight his speculative efforts were far better than anybody else offered.

FWIW I'd bring Broom back in for the next game, maybe in place of Mayor, but tonight where we had no space to play into, where Houghton was marked out of the game, where the centre forwards couldn't hold the ball up, the notion that playing Broom instead of Mayor would have made any difference to the outcome is just histrionics.

I think they need to get both Mayor and Broom in the team somehow. Drop Jephcott also

What a load of rubbish (in my opinion of course!) He’s the only one that made so many chances. Broom would not have created any of those chances, yes he missed the target but so did others. At least he only just missed! Jephcott fluffed every single chance he had and so did others - he deserved his MOM and most teams would snap him up given the chance. He was the only player they were scared off and rightly so because they couldn’t handle his dribbling of the ball. Funny how he was given man of the match, seems others disagree with you too.

I
I wish a team would snap him up just go back to video footage and see how many times he has been caught in possession playing too deep i think you would be surprised

Our best attacking options this season has been down the leaf flank with Grant and Broome combining well together, it has been Grants best season with us, Mayor and Grant just do not work as well together.

Saying that i thought Mayor was the pick of a bad bunch tonight, but it was at the expense of our attacking options.

This thread hasn’t been provoked by this one performance I don’t think. That performance typified his performances throughout his time here. Brilliant at taking in the ball and running with it. Absolutely shocking at shooting or finding that final pass. Not much of a tackler and gives the ball away in dangerous areas. I think he’s on a top wage and we might get more bang for our buck elsewhere that’s all.

So Pan’s shooting is better then or Jephcott’s? DM was far better than both. Pan’s shooting or lack of it never gets a mention. The anti Mayor brigade has always been there and I think it’s pathetic constantly singling out a player.

I’m glad RL thinks differently. RB has gone off the boil recently but no mention about him? £500k you’re having a laugh 🤣

Strikers were poor last night but we seemed to be surprised at how Wycombe set up. I thought we’d change it second half by ‘spinning into channels’ which were so obvious in the first half but nothing! DM certainly not to blame but we need to move the ball quicker in the final third! A quick, slick team would have crucified Wycombe last night. That’s why they were relegated. Tonight was a lesson in how much better the Championship is!

I don't think that's correct at all. Check out their away record. Have got results at Oxford Rotherham and Wigan so don't see how we could be expected to crucify them. They are a tough nut to crack. If we were Liverpool maybe. Also they only got relegated by 1 or 2 points!

I think it can be summed up he isn't a bad player as people suggest. He has got pace and beat a player for fun. However he has no end product and that's what people get angry and frustrated about. I watched the Wycombe game and tbh he was not the worst player on the pitch far from it. But he gets chances and wastes them.

If you think that Mayor was the problem tonight then you were watching an entirely different game to me. In fact I think he was the only player, alongside Camara, giving us any sort of attacking impetus.
The problem is when Mayor picks up the ball, he usually keeps it until he has got nowhere left to turn (or gets tackled).

He doesn't pick the right pass to the right teammate at the most opportune time. He offloads the ball when he can no longer do it by himself, when outmanouvred by a defender, to whoever happens to be there, usually Conor Grant.

He is such a quality player, magnificent at what he does, but he needs to mix it up a bit. Our 90 minute match doesn't need to be all about him travelling with the ball and slaloming past players.

All that dribbling often ends up in a 15 yard pass to a player who is quite tightly marked and can't do a lot with it - but 5-10 seconds before it could have been a forty yard pass to a player in a lot of space.

I thought Mayor had a good game yesterday and was overall our best attacking threat against a packed defence, especially in the second half. Broom has been playing really well recently but perhaps needed a rest. If we are going to do anything this season we're going to need a squad of effective players that can be rotated in and out of the starting eleven, so it is great that we have that option at the moment.
