Should we be prepared to mix up the tactics a bit and instead of always playing out from the back occasionally go long? Last night’s game against Wycombe became so predictable and their press was pretty effective meaning that we were often under pressure immediately the ball was back in play.

Really?!
You watched a different game to me because from my perspective Wycombe took a tactical decision NOT to press. In fact we were under zero pressure whatsoever in possession until the final third when they mostly managed to swamp us (although we did on reflection make a few chances where we should have tested the keeper).

Their deep, compact shape said to Scarr etc, come towards us and try and find an absolute worldy pass.
Would longer passing have worked any better? Not with the strike partnership last night I don't think

Pretty much our only outlet from the back last night was down the middle through Scarr, forcing him to be the play maker. Wycombe did a good job of not allowing us to play down the wings through our Centre backs. Grant and Mayor rarely linked up down the wing.

But Scarr did not come forward! When there were gaping corridors through the middle Scarr would not exploit them and bring the ball into their half ,despite roars from the Devonport to do this .
A complete failure to build an attack ,is he instructed to not take the ball forward , I wonder!
Not A good night ,but we move on and appreciate what a fine run we've had.

Scarr did get forward a few times. But seriously is he a midfield distributor? It was predictable and slow and Wycombe nullified us in the final third. My thoughts were where has our wing play gone. Almost everything went through the middle. However, as Lowe says, you can't have 24 shots and only have 4 on target. Not too disheartened. If one of those shots had found the net then it would have been another story. I'm sure it will be on Saturday.

I thought Scarr did perfectly OK in possession playing many decent-ish balls into the midfield or out wide, then we knocked it around nicely …. all quite pleasing on the eye. But credit to Wycombe they were very compact and as soon as we got into the final third that was when they snapped and harried denying any space and stopping crosses so we kept on either losing it or going backwards to start again. For all our possession we didn’t create many clear cut chances. It was going to take a really good strike to break through (Grant had a couple and Jephers dragged a couple) but our luck wasn’t in.

What we needed was someone to really surge through the space that they were happy to leave in the middle third – the only time that happened was Galloway’s terrific charge when he got injured which carved them right open through the middle and very nearly led to a goal. Scarr is not that sort of player – although a couple of times he was tempted and carried the ball deep into their half but then would lose his nerve and play it sideways. I’m not sure who would be best for that job – Mayor has the frightening skill but he’s not quick enough with it, you need someone to really surge through – maybe putting Grant thru’ the middle? I dunno – sometimes you have to say the other team got their game plan right and we didn’t get the breaks at the right time.

Wycombe didn’t let us use our wing backs therefore our play became repetitive and narrow - Scarr to Houghton, Houghton to Jephcott, move ends, and repeat. Wycombe got their tactics right & they largely nullified us, although our strikers were still poor and offered little movement/threat.

The way they played against us is the way to play against us. We are a pacey team who are dangerous on the break with space to run into. Shut down the space and we don’t have the threat. We have good finishers, but don’t think we have many who are going to threaten with a powerful shot (we have a few, but not many)

They didn't press at all. They marked man for man. A lot of our useful distribution comes from Wilson and Galloway/Gillesphey and they even nullified that. They were so happy to let Scarr have the ball he could always travel to their penalty box. They obviously felt comfortable letting Scarr have the ball cause it meant no diagonal balls or curled balls to the wide areas for Hardie to run onto. They were absolutely right.

The only outlet we had was Mayor who created space for himself, we fired quick balls into him and Camara, whilst Jephcott run deep to try and be the link into the wingbacks (Houghton does this usually but was man marked too) but it was not effective because their man marking was to perfection. Not allowing any space.

You cannot man mark all game though as its tiring and we had more space in the second half but their organisation, SIZE and communication in defence meant they blocked everything. Lowe was outthought on this occasion and it was a frustrating night.

Looked like an obvious tactic early on to close everyone else down but let Scarr have the ball - there was no pressure on him until he was within about 10 yards of their penalty area, on the odd ocassion that he did bring the ball forward.

I would have loved it if he had scored one from 35 yards out, but whatever it was that we did to counter this tactic to disrupt our normal play didn't quite work out.

Jephcott made a lot of useful runs back to get the ball from Scarr (whose distribution I thought was pretty good under the circumstances). I was thinking it could have put Wycombe under more pressure if Jephcott had turned towards their goal with the ball a few more times as he received it, difficult skill though that must be.

They didn’t press at all and Dan Scarr, who I rate highly, didn’t know what to do. He should have carried the ball just like Brendon did when he got injured. I just didn’t know why he just wouldn’t run with the ball into so much space. I think he did it once and then got a nose bleed 😊

Dan Scarr had acres of space to run into, he didn’t run forward though and that was so frustrating for me an ex centre half

But then if we lose possession, which we are likley to do in such a crowded speace, it's even easier for them to score on the counter. Let's be honest, they are set up to play the way they do and they did it to perfection last night. Another team might have stopped them scoring but we let ourselves down on that front. If you look at their results, they often win by just one goal, which they do by wearing teams down and getting inside their heads with their messing around and time wasting. Then, boom, lapse of concentration and they're in. And they have a very strong front man capable of taking his chances. It's a particular way of playing that isn't fun to watch but can be effective at this level. Didn't work in the Championship.

Mayor should have come to Scarr taken the ball from him and played the killer pass through to our forward line!! Instead he ran from Scarr leaving the defender to make a telling pass which was what Mayor should have been doing!
