Charlieboy it comes down to the fact that this has become a B team via the backdoor competition.
As much as the idea of B teams in the league keeps being muted, the ugly idea keeps cropping up. It's clearly on the agenda for those who have significant clout to push it.

There's resistance to it now, but several years ago the idea of Argyle playing against PL B teams in any competition was alien and now it's a reality. Which is why this competition in its current guise should be treated with absolute distain as it supports the premise of B teams in the pyramid.

Like you say, these competitions are a great opportunity to showcase our own academy talent. I would love nothing more than for the B teams to be scrapped from the competition and the boycott ended. It would be truly brilliant to have (back) a competition in which we can play our academy with at least 6-7000 fans in attendance rather than an 1/8th of our usual league attendance despite a BoGoF offer. Now that would be far better for our fringe players and academy and would give the games less of a sterile feel.

As it currently is I'm absolutely delighted when we bin out of the group stage.

We do not have a reserve fixture list so needless to say any competition which give our fringe players an opportunity is a good thing, it also allows players returning from injury to get match fit,,Major and Agard are good examples who would benefit. To say these games are pointless is strange when these are professional footballers and should all be aspiring to play in the first eleven. What was apparent the other evening was our youngsters do not play enough competitive football, playing in the youth teams is not good enough. Tomlinson, Law and Randell etc need to be playing every week and for Lowe to comment suggesting they did not take the opportunity is bizarre when these young men spend most of the season watching the games. The South Western Leagues is perfect for these lads and I have no idea why we do not participate bearing in mind we have apparently got such a strong relationship with the Cornwall and Devon FA. It would also give our coaches an opportunity to look at some of the young players whom they are playing against and maybe unearth a gem.

Is the 'Central League' that we played in pre-pandemic coming back at some point?

Randell, Tomlinson, Shirley and Law have played about three games each in three months and desperately need to retain their match sharpness.

Even the younger players who are still eligible for the youth team probably aren't getting the standard of football they need to develop, against school kids from Cheltenham and Forest Green who will mostly end up playing in pub leagues.

Regular reserve team fixtures are absolutely critical to our hopes of bringing through players who can eventually play in League 1 and higher.

i don’t think there’s any chance of Premier B teams happening at least in the near future.

The idea keeps cropping up though Janner doesn't it.

Figures at the self proclaimed elite clubs say they want it, this time Peppy G. The EFL chair says no thanks. Although this is the same man who supported Project Big Picture, which would have handed control of English football to the clubs vying for the ESL & B teams.

You say you don't think there's a chance, but we literally have an EFL competition now containing B teams.

Supporting Argyle in the PJT is oxymoronic.

Too many people confuse Pep Guardiola's personal views as being a Manchester City policy, which this isn't. He is only for it because he believes it works back in his own country but the club have never suggested the EFL should go down this route.

He isn't the first to express it. He won't be the last. You seriously don't think those clubs are interested in B teams?

B teams are playing in an EFL competition. That's a fact.

Under 21's are not B teams though. People are saying that Argyle's youngsters need valuable and meaningful competition to aid their progression but then don't like the fact that this competition is providing just that for Cat 1 academies.

This is the same Rick Parry who thinks the super league is a good idea.

He still obeys his PL bosses, but won't admit it.

Push comes to shove he'll say what he's told

Premier teams could invest some of their vast wealth into a League for Reserve and B teams. Premier and Championship teams could have restrictions on age/ experience of players eligible. Lower EFL teams could play reserves.
It could be national and/or regional.

You could call it maybe: the Football Combination League?? 😆

There already are two divisions of PL2 and these are not exclusive to Premier League clubs. There is a L1 club playing in PL2 second division. Premier League clubs don't have reserve or B teams anymore so I can't see them investing in a league of that sort.

😂 Ah okay I'm sold then. U21s in the pyramid is just fine 👍

Isn't there a Palace forum you can make a fool of yourself on?

They do still have reserve teams, just rebranded as u23s.. I have no problem with them joining the pizza cup as long as we can all admit it’s a glorified reserves cup. And at no point are welcome in the league pyramid, lower league football is unique and needs to be protected.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.

As for the rebranded reserves league. Argyle are not barred, even whilst their first team are in L1.

When Tier 5 of English football is averaging nearly 2,500 attendance, as it is this season, then it should tell Guardiola and the like why the introduction of Premier League B teams into the pyramid is absolutely unnecessary. And unlike in Spain and Germany, where the best attendances for lower League sides are against Barcelona and Real Madrid B, the opposite would happen in England. Argyle would get far more for a home League game v Cheltenham than against Chelsea B, as is evidenced by the truly awful Trophy competition currently. And that's not just because of the boycott.
A lot of people got very excited when we held Liverpool at Anfield. Whilst I'm sure the 9000 there had a wonderful day out, we were effectively playing Liverpool's 3rds on the day. You could argue that lower league fans should be boycotting the other cup competitions too..
