Interesting to hear what wellens has said about head of referred “both harsh and shouldn’t be penalties”. Got to be talking tripe surely. Personally thought both were, even if first was a little soft.

Agreed, although I couldn't see how either would not have resulted in a pen award nine times out of ten. Broom was 'wiped out' for the first one - and the fact that he released the ball before impact should, in my opinion, have no bearing on it. The second one is interesting but only insofar as the degree to which the attacker may have 'made a meal' of it. Having just seen Charlie's camera view from behind the goal ('Matchday Moments') I am even more convinced that the keeper had both his arms around Agard's leg to prevent him from getting to the loose ball. Penalty! (y)

It's a worry that Wellens said the Head of Referee's didn't think they were penalties. They were nailed on! Very strange.

It's disrespectful of Wellens to hint that Agard dived and disrespectful of the Head of Referee's to undermine Trevor Kettle.

"But I spoke to Mike Jones, the head of referees, this morning and he apologises because he thinks that both penalties were harsh and in his opinion they weren’t penalties."

I think only Agard and the keeper know if 2nd was a pen. My doubt is because I can't understand/believe why the keeper would do such a stupid thing. I think Agard made the most of any contact anyway lets put it that way. He's an old pro. He was there in the right place which is why he was signed.

So where in HP was the Head of Referees sat?
Nice to know he was here so close to the live action to pass judgement on the 2 pens. Good for him. Very professional of him.

And I also think that Matchday Moments shows another Argyle pen, with whichever Argyle player was being clearly manhandled during a set piece.

Asch as I hate the saying

"He felt contact and he had the right to go down"

My only thoughts were that the keeper had a rush of blood to the head, assumed that he might get a FK for dropping it and wanted the ball back to take it quickly.

I suspect that either the conversation between Head of Referee and Wellens, or the one between Wellens and the newspaper were not intended for public consumption but a cock up has been made. The Head of referee's won't be impressed either way.

I was in block eight and was sat in a straight line from it. The goalkeeper tripped him. Whilst I am biased the linesman flag went straight up who had a similar view to those in block eight

Head of Referees should not be saying this; private or not. He should be saying: Ref gave it, I wasn't there. Penalties all day long.

I am bemused by all the discussion on those penalties. If we gave them away, I'd have accepted them. Not been happy, obviously, but I've missed what there was to discuss with either of them.

According to Donny forum, keeper did the same previous week and got away with it. Seems he’s prone to stupid things.

Both stonewall penalties. case of a manager trying to deflect to take pressure off results.
