Where has the idea come from that everyone who’s against smoke bombs also wants everyone to sit down and shut up?
It's called Begging the Question. A fallacious argument based on assuming an unproved conclusion.

I can't say I find pyrotechnics critical to creating a good atmosphere. Equally though, at games I've attended where flares or smokebombs have gone off, their effects have been easily avoidable and not overly bothersome. There are probably millions of aspects of 'the matchday experience' that are more of a health hazard (the standard of the catering or toilets at some grounds, for example, or large crowds of people gathered together at the height of the winter flu season).

I also have some sympathy with young people who find that many of their leisure activities - including watching football, but also things like dance music, or festivals or even pursuits as mundane as skateboarding or jumping in the sea - are becoming increasingly commercialised, sanitised and controlled. There's nothing surprising or new or especially unhealthy about teenagers and 20somethings getting a buzz out of doing something they perceive to be transgressive. The debate about pyrotechnics is a bit pointless because they're not going to be unbanned any time soon, but these age groups are key to Argyle's future and we need to think about how to accommodate the way that they want to watch football, as well as other demographics.

Flares certainly burn that hot. Melting point of iron isn't far off that temperature. Smoke distress signals or smoke bombs are a lot less but still get hot. The online bought effects pyrro which I suspect this is are even lower.

Don't know the legal status on effects pyros but it's against the law to ignite a distress signal be it smoke or flare unless in distress. Not even meant to dispose of life expired ones by setting them off.. though I routinely did for training purposes .

So how are all those people in the crowd holding those flares (or in the vicinity) not getting excruciatingly painful burns?

Good noise from the GA last night, would have been even better with a few smoke bombs let off for the goal celebrations.

Good to see the whole away end standing up and singing, was worried after reading through this thread that we may all be sat down. Another reminder that pasoti isn't representative of the general consensus amongst argyle fans.

Except loads of people have agreed with you on this site, and loads of people have disagreed. So I'm not sure where the perception of Pasoti having a herd view comes from, when it's clearly a fairly broad church.

And this thread has been about the smoke bombs, NOT about standing or singing.

And if I'm being even more pedantic, a (fantastic) away following of 800 isn't any more representative of Argyle fans.

Yeah don't worry about those unable to stand and can't see a thing. Doesn't matter to you does it?

I was young , I did stuff I regret.
I'm older, I don't do stuff and I regret it.
Finding the balance is key.

I can enjoy a smoke bomb from afar, very afar, but get the sentiment.

I'd hazard a guess that they weren't holding the hot end :) As a youngster I was fairly adept at holding fireworks in the right place (including rockets). I also copped a firework full in the face at about age 10...nasty burns and it hurt. I don't have a problem with anybody holding a flare, they can kiss a pit bull for all I care, as long as no one else is injured (and the pit bull consents!).

Umm I rarely get filed on here but this post totally pi££ed me off😡😡

You must be aiming this at my generation where my son is 27. Totally out of order if you are tarring me and my family with this brush.

Let's gets back to football and perhaps I will ignore Kentishgreen posts as he is obviously up his own rear🤫😡
Water off a duck’s back mate, of course there was no violence, abuse, racism, sexism, selfishness etc prior to 1979 😂 rose tinted glasses

Is throwing a smoke bomb or waving a flare about an admission that as one of the more "active' supporters, you're.....well, a bit boring to be fair. Unable to drum up any atmosphere through your own endeavour, you have to lob pyros about. Usually just the odd one in isolation which looks a bit naff. Hardly an East European cauldron of intimidation is it.

So they literally have flares in abundance, held in their hands, burning at 1600 degrees centigrade, and fans on here are moaning about the smoke bomb (which isn't a flare) a good 10 metres past any Argyle supporter, and its potential to burn and scald everyone?

The funny thing is, if you'd thrown one onto the pitch in the 70's, everyone would have fallen about laughing.

Atmosphere? 😂

Here’s an example of what these “flares” actually are. I think people are getting their knickers in a twist without realising what the “kidsare actually using. This was during the World Cup (first time I’d seen one). It’s a small can that omits smoke which isn’t very thick or strong and can be held as seen. Totally different to a “flare” that was thrown onto home park in the JPT match vs Exeter that DID leave a burnt patch on the side of the pitch.

They are still against ground regs, but aren’t bottle of toxic lava that will scold anything in sight subjecting anyone within 50 metres to lung choking smoke. Chill out, some posters are desperate to be offended by anything and everything.
