Luv these old pics. Can anyone tell me, what was the reaction at the time to the brutalist style buildings in the city centre built after the blitz.? Was there any general consultation amongst Plymothians?
I wouldn't have called them brutalist, they are in stone as opposed to concrete.
I don't know for sure but recall seeing old photos showing people examining the plans and discussing them. These are most likely to have been the members of the council than your average man in the street.
My parents lived through the war, my mother actually in Plymouth, both preferred the new City centre to what had been there before although there was nostalgia for what had been lost.

Our sports ground was there underneath the flyover. Needless to say that never used to be there. Marsh Mills with the emphasis on Marsh! I’m surprised you could build anything there let alone a Tesco.

You’re quite right Argylegames. Never previously realised the term applies to the material as well as the shape. I found it a bit gruesome when we moved down here, but now I’m fine with it.
