I’m surprised Lundan Caddie hasn’t reminded us for the 842nd time that this fixture does not constitute a ‘derby’. Personally, I think the dislike is too one-sided to warrant a label of any kind. I do hope we smash them though because I loathe them ten times more than Exeter and Bristol R combined.

These games were never actually bugger all to do with the dockyards. It was all to do with the rivalry between Guzz and Pompey ratings...all Navy. It’s not new, I can remember my dad talking about the Battle of the Ports and he joined up in 1942. Exeter isn’t even a “derby” game. Now if Parkway were to make the jump into hyperspace...different kettle of fish.

Portsmiff v Polimuff in the "can you point them out on a map because they're two different places actually" derby.

Aaaaaaah, but Brighton is also an ocean city..... and it is closer to Portsmouth. That could get confusing.
Brighton isn't on the ocean LC, surely even cockles know that?

It was always the Battle of the Ports - I can remember Argyle using the term in their advertising in the Erald. Just 2 problems with "Dockyard derby" - Portsmouth isn't a dockyard - and hasn't been for years - and the other problem has already been well covered!
Pretty irrelevant anyway given the diminished role of the Navy - important matches to me, purely because I just can't stand them. May '83 - enough said.

Thinking about it Fg, you're right. It is HM Dockyard Devonport and HM Naval Base Portsmouth. HMS Drake is a completely separate entity to the Dockyard whereas HMS Nelson is the Naval Base.

Devonport is also now a Naval Base and has been for some time:

HMNB DEVONPORT

The largest naval base in Western Europe, Devonport has been supporting the Royal Navy since 1691. The vast site covers more than 650 acres and has 15 dry docks, four miles of waterfront, 25 tidal berths and five basins. The base employs 2,500 Service personnel and civilians, supports around 400 local firms and generates around ten per cent of Plymouth’s income.

So it maybe it should be "Battle of the Naval Bases"? Always has been Battle of the Ports for me.
