I feel like a broken record but I’m sorry where does the stat come from that cloth face coverings prevent 50% of transmission?
50 was a number...and a mask no matter what is made of will lesson the chances.. I know what covid can do.. seen the tears of a health worker with my own eyes.. rather it was still tried to be prevented from spreading

Good old England. I've no issue with mask wearing and intend to do so whenever requested or I deem it necessary to protect others as best I believe I can.

I hope none of the anti whatevers or conspiracy brigade line staycations. I've travelled today and was required to wear a mask throughout as a condition of carriage, along with proof of negative test, proof of Govt tracking form, proof of day 2 testing being organised as well as my voluntary twice weekly lateral flow testing. No real hassle and I got a nice tan for my troubles.

As for Govt surveillance, well, my phone contained all my flight and medical details, my passport was stamped and scanned electronically, I've probably appeared on a camera somewhere since I set out this morning and my mobile phones know exactly where I've been. A bit of mask wearing and covid documentation makes little difference to big brothet.

A mask doesn't make a difference you handle your ticket, programme, food, drink, your clothes that you wear, your seat. All touched by someone else. Do you really think a virus can't get through that mask if oxygen can?

When we buy something from a shop is it it sanatised, nope. Do we touch and take it home. Yes.
Try gas mask

It's about reducing the transmission of the virus. I don't think people are saying wearing a mask will STOP you from getting the virus, moreover, reducing the chance of you developing it.

Can sanitise your hands after touching anything as well as anything you might touch. The virus is not absorbed by the skin.. only enters through nose n mouth.

It’s not just a number though, it gives people a false feeling of safety. I put the results of a national poll on another thread where those asked thought that masks are twice as effective at preventing infections as good ventilation or social distancing. That’s extremely dangerous. Last year, when the first lockdown occurred I would go down to my local Tesco Express and there were strict limits on numbers of people in the store and there was a one way system. Once mandatory mask wearing came in, it was more a less a free for all in the store as people felt the masks gave them protection. I’m hugely concerned that the narrative on face masks is out of control and may actually make things worse by giving people a false sense of security.

Sitting or standing next to a person with a face mask? Are they wearing a fresh disposable mask or a freshly washed cloth mask? Is it covering the face and nose or is it pulled down below the nose, strung around the neck or used as a wrist band?
The mind boggles.

Here’s a suggestion for all the dumb conspiracy theorists who are convinced that COVID is some sort of gigantic worldwide control plan...get your sorry ar5e5 to your nearest hospital and volunteer to work, without any form of PPE on a COVID ward. While you’re at it, you can also be the one that has to inform grieving family members that mum/dad/granny has passed away because the selfish brat of a family member refused to wear a mask, when asked to do so.

Dr Colin Axon, who is Senior Engineering Lecturer at Brunel University and advises SAGE on ventilation and minimising the risk of cross infection in supermarkets, stadiums etc has stated "Standard face coverings (those cloth and blue paper masks) are just "comfort blankets" that do little to reduce the spread of Covid particles".
Dr Colin Axon has warned some cloth masks have gaps which are invisible to the naked eye, but are 5,000 times the size of viral Covid particles.
"The small sizes are not easily understood but an imperfect analogy would be to imagine marbles fired at builders' scaffolding, some might hit a pole and rebound, but obviously most will fly through".
Dr Axon said the public need to be offered a wider view of the science behind face masks, rather than the "partial view" of information being pushed by medics over their effectiveness. He accused medics of presenting a "cartoonish" view of how tiny particles travel through the air.
"Once a particle is not on a biological surface it is no longer a biomedical issue, it is simply about physics. The public has only a partial view of the story if information only comes from one type of source. Medics have some of the answers but not a whole view."
"Masks can catch droplets and sputum from a cough but what is important is that SARS CoV-2 is predominantly distributed by tiny aerosols which escape through gaps in standard masks. A Covid viral particle is around 100 nanometres, material gaps in blue surgical masks are up to 1,000 times that size, cloth mask gaps can be 5,000 times the size."

Dr Axon has advised Sage and Nervtag on ventilation, he is not currently a Sage adviser.

It has always been that way.
I remember the government discussing mask wearing at the very start and even many scientific minds were against it. The government was divided on the issue. It is pretty daft making millions of people continually touch a germ infested piece of fabric and put it over their nostrils 50 times a day, usually immediately before or after touching door handles, entering or exiting a building and pulling back chairs. It is a sure fire way to spread it than prevent it.
Boris Johnson scared too many people after the first lockdown and many didn’t want to come out of it. People were scared to use public transport. No one was coming back to work because they were terrified, the furlough scheme allowed millions to stay at home and all the while the economy was off a cliff edge.
‘Comfort blanket’ is an apt description. Johnson let millions of people believe wearing a farting piece of cloth over their nose was going to stop them getting an extremely contagious virus - because for his government it meant getting the economy back on track.
When masks were first introduced it was with 2 metre social distancing. Do you notice how social distancing isn’t even really a thing any more? It was the key strategy to defeat COVID at the start, but it has gradually been replaced with the mask nonsense.

Please remember that Covid spiralling out of control at Christmas and now has done so with most of the population wearing masks and doing what they were told. The mask strategy has stopped very little and remains a gimmick.

Most people stood in the concourse are eating and/or drinking so that's probably why no one appeared to be wearing them.

Can any of the resident experts clear up the confusion over just who a mask protects?

I've long been under the impression that me wearing o e protects YOU from me, not the other way around. They're supposed to stop my germ laden breath travelling too far from my orifices not your manky exhalations from entering me.

Personal responsibility on my part. I'm not ending covid, just trying to limit it's chances of being spread by me. Something I'm still quite happy to do.

The issue lies in which type of mask. If it’s a single layer cloth mask the pore sizes are pretty much non-existent and really don’t do a whole lot due to almost everything you are able to expel through your breath at least will pass through and due to no real pores it will go both ways. You can get multiple layer masks which are a slight improvement but it relies on it being almost like a web, and made of differing materials, you can get medical grade masks like this that must be proven to catch 95% of water droplets however the virus among other things could still pass through. If you have a medical grade mask containing membrane depending on the pore size it will catch some of the stuff you will breathe out or in depending on which way the membrane works. If people are really worried you should invest in these although they won’t be cheap.
