If we're talking the last 30 years surely Bobby Williamson and Paul Mariner should be included in the debate?

:) Not a bad striking combination on the pitch to be fair.

... add Sturrock in and we'd be well set for Div 1 (all players at their 'peak' natch!!)

There you are, another close season exercise!!

Manager's X!?? Waiters in goal. Big Malc at the back with Moncur? Bingham on the wing? Ufton on the advertising hoarding!!?? Sheridan in mid? Quite a good team I reckon. Shall we make it post War??

Shilton on the bench? :) Along with Summerfield Ian Holloway and Ken Brown.
Ken Brown and Allison actually played together for West Ham so they could be considered a good pairing. History indicates that Ufton was quite a decent centre half for Charlton though they did concede a lot of goals towards the end of his time there. 6 against Argyle in October 1959 and then 11 against Villa in the November. Couldn't find a place for any of Lord, Kemp or Mariner simply because Sturrock and especially Rowley were such great players. Your mention of Shilton led me to think about the fact that not many clubs have had two England international goalkeepers as manager?

MM,

Suspect not many clubs had 2 goalkeeper managers, let alone international ones.

Kevin Blackwell was assistant to Mick Jones at Argyle and then managed at Leeds and Bury. We also had Larrieu (jointly with Fletcher) so must be a speciality for us.

Struggling to think of keepers who became managers though. Quite a lot seem to become coaches. Crudgington and Wilmott for example.

Edit to add - have done quick bit of research Norwich had Bryn Gunn and Mike Walker as managers.

Good man. Research of the highest order! One position seems to have drawn a blank. Argyle have not had a left winger as a manager - either full time or in the caretaker role.

Mariner was a far better player than Sturrock. Osman would have got in that side too.
